What are the standard tests to test fertility?

    Hi,

I have really irregular cycles. I track my cycle and I ovulate very erratically. My doctor thought I had PCOS, so scheduled me for blood work (LH, FSH) and transvaginal ultrasound. Everything came back normal. I got a blood work done for endocrine disorders and everything came back fine (I know hyperthyroid causes irregular cycles). I don't have gyno, so everything was done via my GP. My family doctor referred to a gynecologist (appointment in August) is a specialist who works out of a hospital. I have no idea what to expect. What are the standard tests to test fertility? Are there medications that my make my cycle more regular that are not birth control? I want to be prepared for my appointment.

So my husband and I just went through this. It sounds like you had every study done that I had. They found out that I have PCOS (newly diagnosed) I'm 33, thin, no acne or facial hair-- My only issue was irregular periods.. they were actually shocked that I had it. Anyways, they checked my adrenals, and they checked out ok. I also had a ton of genotype testing done to see if I was a carrier or if I had any diseases. They also performed an HSG test. It's a dye test that looks at your Fallopian tubes to make sure they are open. A lot of things on the internet make it sound horrific, but I assure you, it was no worse than getting a Pap smear. I hope this helps. Good luck with everything!!!

Also, they have medications that will regulate you, or make you ovulate. Clomid, and letrozole. I just took my first round of letrozole

Thank you.for responding. Based on your description of the tests, it doesn't seem that bad.

I started menstruating at age 11 and by age 16 they were pretty regular. I've cycles that have been every 26/27 days except for time I've been sick (hospital sick, not home with cold sick). Around late 2015/early 2016 my cycles became irregular. My doctor brushed it off to stress etc and didn't think it was a big deal. Now, after over a decade of regular cycles, I'm had 16 days cycles to 50 day cycles and right now I'm currently on day 45 after my last cycle was 25 days.

Can you get your period without ovulating? Like will your body just go through withdrawal symptoms after a while and decide to bleed? I've tracking my cycle, cervical mucus, and tempting when I can. However, I never get that egg white CM. Almost three weeks ago I got sore nipples which I usually get 2-3 days before my period is supposed to start, but then it just went away without a period.

Re: What are the standard tests to test fertility?

So I started my period at 18. I was always a little irregular, but nothing like I was this past year. I would go 40-45 days between cycles, but last year I had maybe 5-6 periods. I, too, chalked it up as stress, and when I went for my annual pap they ran blood work because my OBGYN said that it wasn't normal (obviously). I had my LH and FSH drawn and she said that my hormones were off, and she tested my husband (who has great swimmers btw), and said that she would feel more comfortable if i saw a reproductive/endocrinologist. They did a series of tests like i said, and one of them was an ovarian assessment. She was able to see/tell how many healthy eggs I had. She said she wonders if i ever ovulated because i have a TON of young and healthy eggs-- but i figured it was bc I was a late bloomer starting at 18. Regardless, I think you can have a period without ovulating, or at least thats what I gathered from it.If you're not trying to get pregnant, I would just say try birth control?

I would still get PMS, and sometimes no period.. I would have cravings of chocolate, sore boobs, clear discharge, cramps, etc. the whole 9 yards, but no blood. I would eventually start, but i never knew when. I never took birth control, and maybe I should have, but I think as long as you are not trying to get pregnant, dont worry too much about your fertility just yet.

    Hi... Femme446
Don't be stressed. You surely go for a gynaecologist as soon as possible to get proper treatment. I am suggesting you few standard tests to test fertility that involves Ovulation testing, Hysterosalpingography, Ovarian reserve testing, Hysteroscopy, Laparoscopy and Genetic testing. Good Luck.

Irregular periods because of PCOS is very common in many women. As You suffered from this problem. One of my friends had the same problem. She struggled a lot to overcome this problem. Irregular periods really irritating and full of anxiety. Sometimes she got period after a month and when they come they last for a month. She got frustrated and very weak. Then, I suggest her to consult with a doctor that had takes some tests. After results of the test, she prescribed some medicines. Her doc adviced her to make some changes in daily life. To follow the diet very carefully. I suggest you eat healthy, practice yoga and exercise daily, drink plenty of water, do not smoke and drink and take medication properly.A little exercise and have plenty of water. Make these few changes in your daily life and see results. If you still feeling some problem then consult to a gynecologist for a proper check-up. Hope this may helps you. Good Luck. "
