    23 and infertile?HELP

This is my first time posting anything so please bear with me...I am 23 yrs old and 3 1/2 months ago I stopped taking Yasmin to hopefully start a family. Now, I have been on BC for 10 years for irregular periods, so I have been used to the changes with pills and there side effects. However, the problems that I have been facing since I got off ranges from hot flashes, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability (which my husband has now labeled "the psyco moments"), depressed, just feeling completely off, and the most troubling...HAIR LOSS.

It took three negative pregnacy tests and me constantly crying to be dragged to the doctor for these problems. Now, this is what they are saying:
    1. Thyroid Problem-need a blood test, which I just got back as NORMAL
    2. Hormone problems-need more blood tests, which will take weeks to get the results
    3. Possible PCOS and infertility

The doctors placed me on Provera for ten days (beginning of NOV 05) and I finally got my period after 2 1/2 months of waiting. And let me just tell you it was the period from HELL! While I was on the medication I felt like I was getting back to normal; however three days of being off of it all the symtoms came back. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

The thing is my husband and I are stationed in Okinawa, Japan and the doctors out here don't seemed to be to worried about my condition. So I am taking matters into my own hands and looking into what needs to be done. Please, HELP! Any information would be great.

I'm not an expert on this, let me say that upfront. When I read your symptoms I immediately thought "thyroid problem" so imagine my surprise to read that they checked that and it came back normal. I have read that it is sometimes difficult to diagnose thyroid problems so maybe there is more testing they can do in that dept. If you do have PCOS, try not to panic. PCOS does not guarantee infertility. I have a friend with PCOS and she has 2 kids. There is a lot of research on nutrition and PCOS so maybe you could start to research that. You may also want to look into Vitex, which is an herb that has an excellent track record in regulating periods. It is most effective when the problem is hormonal, so it may or may not work for you. Nonetheless, you should look into it. Also, keep in mind that it takes the most fertile couple 6mos-1year to get pregnant. Contrary to what they told us in sex ed, it's just not always that easy! Try to be patient (hard, I know) throughout this and just know that the odds are good that you will conceive some day!

    Hi jennypoo!
"From one military wife to another!"

I just wanted to let you know that we are in the same boat.I will tell you my story, but it will be kind of long. I am 23 years Old and have been off birth control since last deccember and no luck yet. I truly understand your frustration with military doctors, I am stationed in hawaii with my husband. We have tried everything. My period was regular right after I got off the pill and then last april they started being irregular. I went to see my "Military" Doctor, who didn't seem concerned at all. which I understand that there are plenty of things to cause you to be late and ect. Well months went on, I started having really bad pains in my ovaries, still to this day. So I went back b/c i was 2 months late. They did a Pg test and it was neg. So i was like okay, what now. She wanted to put me on this pill for 5 days to jump start my period. I didn't want to take just any pill especailly with this pain I was having. She sent me to have a vaginal ultrasound done. They found cyst, but they said they were really small and not to worry. I was just wondering if those "small" cyst could put me in so much pain that I could not walk! So I called my doctor and demanded to see an OBGYN to see if i could get answers. Well I went to see them..."The Doctors" They did not do anything. I expressed to him about the pain, ttc everything. He called in Prenatal vitamens, which I think was great, but still no anwers. So here it is...still no luck. I went to see my doctor again to get a referral to a infertility doctor. I am willing to do what ever I have and I don't care who I have to push around. Our first step is on progress. we have an appointment to have a semem analysist done next week. All I have to say to you..you have to demand what you want! Treaten to contact higher grounds! Do whatever you can to make sure you are okay and you are treated right! Please keep me informed and let me know what happens!

Jenny, you are NOT infertile. You're young and have only been off bcp for three months, believe me, at this stage you are very definitely not infertile and your post would be better off on the TTC board.

However, I will respond to your question. Coming off bcp can send your hormones wacky for a while, particularly if you had irregular cycles beforehand. Being on bcp we forget how cr*ppy normal cycles and pms can make us feel, what you're feeling is most likely normal - a more extreme version of normal, but still normal.

I'd recommend dietary changes, (no caffeine, lots of oily fish, fruit and veg, complex carbs and limiting sugar) as they can help with the pms. Exercise might also help. Things should improve as your hormones sort themselves out, but at your age no dr will bother doing fertility testing without good reason and to be blunt, you don't have good reason as yet. As a previous poster said it is normal to take up to a year to conceive and there is no sense in panicking just yet. True, not being able to get pregnant exactly when you want does suck, but worrying about infertility after three months is just taking the p*ss.

Jennypoo, even though you have only been ttc 3 1/2 months, the fact that you have irregular periods SHOULD be a reason for the doctor to pay attention. It is true that some women can be irregular when going off the pill for up to a year or two (even if they were regular beforehand), but if you were initially put on the BCP because you were irregular, you probably won't become regular now that you're off them again. Women with irregular periods could have PCOS or Endometriosis like you mentioned. I think you certainly have a right to find out WHY you have irregular periods whether ttc or not, because having endometriosis or PCOS could affect other aspects of your health. You have every right to be proactive with your health!!

Jennypoo - i agree with HeyKnack, if you have had irregular periods before going on bcp and you now wish to start TTC you need to know WHY they were irregular in the first place, you are young, which means you have plenty of time so now is the time to do something about it, if your concerned i would deffinately go to the doctors and see what they say.

My doctors would not help me until i had done 3-4months of BBT, once these all showed no signs of ovulation i was booked into see my Gyn who then put me on meds to bring on AF and then sent me for a Hystosalpingogram (which they could not do in the end due to something blocking the catheter) and a Laparoscopy, this was all done in 6months (my first appointment with my doctors with my charts was Jan 05) i am now going to an infertility specialist (1st appointment today), if i had not been to see my doctor i would not have got this far (im 29 and the clock is kinda ticking!).

Make an appointment and air your views, ask for help and hopefully they will give you answers, i want to wish you all the luck in the world and hope it all works out for you

This is a great board and everyone will give advise if they can, its one big happy family, the support you will get will overwhelm you.

    Good luck and take care
