Is Doxycycline Ototoxic?
I have started taking doxycycline to treat a chronic lyme infection; I take 300 mg a day, which is a high amount, but only started taking it last Saturday (2 days ago).
On the first day of taking it I did not notice any problems. Yesterday morning, however, I had a spike in my high frequency tinnitus for no particular reason, but it eventually died down.
When I took my fourth pill (150 mg) that night, however, I got another tinnitus spike just before going to bed. When I woke up in the morning, some of my low frequency hearing was gone and my ears had a burning sensation.
I have been losing my low frequency hearing regularly these days, but not out of the blue as happened last night.
Doxy is not listed as being ototoxic, but I have heard accounts from people who at have at least had increases in tinnitus from the drug. I am especially worried because I started at such a high dose, even if I only took it for 2 days total. Most antibiotics seem to have an ototoxic risk associated with them.
Is there a reason to be concerned, and will my symptoms reverse themselves?
Thanks for the help!
