What triggers a panic attack ???

    Hi,
I haven't been feeling too bad lately, only slightly dizzy. Mainly that walking on a boat type feeling.
Last night I started feeling nauseous, tired, and a bit dizzy all of a sudden . So I decided to go to bed because I thought if I fall asleep then I wont feel it.
When I got in bed it felt worse. I still felt a dizzy feeling happening through my body. Then I got the shakes, I had ringing in my left ear and I felt really weak so I gather I was experiencing one of those horrible panick attacks. Of course when you start feeling like that you make yourself feel worse by worrying about what is happening to your body.

Does anyone know what triggers off these stupid attacks??

I started breathing deeply into a brown paper bag. (That's what my Doctor told me to do if it ever happened again)
I guess it worked because after about 20 mins things had calmed down again.

If anyone has any ideas on how to prevent these stupid attacks, I would love to hear from you.

    Oscar

hey Oscar, well you know what I don't think there is anything which can prevent it. I'm in month 7 and the attacks are gettting less. I think I make myself anxous sometimes when doing things again for the first time. I used to be afraid to be on my own and that has only subsided recently where if I'm feeling ok then its no big deal. I think it affects each of us in different ways. Hang in there, it will get better, promise!

Hi - I know just how u feel and it's miserable isn't it? I used to get panicky because I felt so weird - I didn't even know I had ear problems then! It was a relief to find out there was a reason that I was feeling so odd!

Why don't you try something like Bachs rescue remedy (a flower remedy) or Kalms when it happens? You can get these from health food stores. The thing you have to remember when you're panicking is that you won't feel like that soon - it WILL pass and then you will be fine again!

    Hi Oscar,
I have had the panic attacks, and I know just what you are speaking of. I didn't know what it was at first. I was riding in the car and we got stuck in traffic. I was feeling VERY crummy with the disequillibrium already, and all of a sudden my ears started to ring loud (they always ring) and sound was blocked out, and I felt like I would blackout. I couldn't catch my breath, I started shaking, it was a horrible feeling. I felt like I would die. I wasn't feeling particularly anxious, but my doctor explained it's really common with inner ear disorders. It's not that you are a panicky person, it's your body panicking from the symptoms. My doc gave me Klonopin for symptoms and panic. It does help, but I don't take it as he directed which is twice a day. My panic attacks are much fewer now despite the fact that my symptoms persist, maybe my body is more accepting now...I don't know. I don't know exactly what triggers it, like I said, we were stuck in traffic, so maybe something to do with being stuck....I have been feeling "stuck" a lot in the last year. But I have had them at other time too, and there doesn't seem to be a specific trigger for me, it's like my body just has to DO SOMETHING!!! Anyway, what is your diagnosis?

Re: What triggers a panic attack ???

    Hi everyone!

I've had panic disorder for 13+ years, although I only found out what was wrong with me about 5 years. I really believe that the root of my disorder is from my ears. For years I have had problems with my ears (fullness, gurgling) and episodes of feeling off balance. After one particular bad 'episode' my panic went into full mode with anxiety 24hrs day with panic attacks in between. I believe that for some people if they are having problems with their ears and their balance is off this can create and atmosphere that is perfect for panic to set in. Someone once told me that a panic attack is like being in a car accident (that's the feeling) so when one has the disorder it can be a vicious cycle.... you get dizzy, panic.. then worry about panicking again which sets you up for another one. I still have alot of problems with my one ear and it has become painful now, I have been told that i have ETD eustucian tube dysfunction due to allergies. It seems to be a constant battle everyday..

My disorder was so bad that I hit bottom and had thoughts of suicide... I finally accepted the diagnosis and went on med's which really saved my life. I think the biggest thing in my experience with it all is that I was able to get to a point that if I do panic I let it happen.. I don't fight it, I just allow it, which makes a world of difference. By that I mean that when I feel one I sit very still I don't tense up I remember to breathe and tell myself that it will be over soon and that I will be fine. Now if I could only talk to my ears like that!!!

Hang in there and know that you can and will get better.... I did...

    Hi Julianne,

I was sent to an ENT specialist just over 2 years ago to check out what was wrong with me. He found that I had what he called a stone in my middle ear which keeps moving around and that is what makes me feel dizzy. He said it could last up until 1 year.

I explained the horrible feelings that I used to get to my local GP so many times and he just said that it was probably a hormonal thing due to that time of the month. He kept telling me the same thing but I wasn't convinced.
It wasn't until I started reading these boards that I discovered the symptoms that other people had which they called Panic Attacks were exactly like my symptoms.
I then went pack to my GP and told him my symptoms again and he finally said that I was experiencing Panic Attacks. (I could of told him that after reading the boards)

I have found these boards a great help and realise now that I am not alone and that when I start to experience those attacks I know now that I will wake up the next morning and not die in my sleep (like I used to think was going to happen) I will just take 1 day at a time.

"....he just said that it was probably a hormonal thing due to that time of the month."

... Do u mean pms type thing? The ENT dr that i went to asked me if my attacks (vertigo) corresponded with this. She said that it could have something to do with water retention in the same chamber that stores too much liquid/doesn't let it drain fast enough that occurs in Meniers.

Also panic-wise lots of people feel panicky and worried at that time of the month - there are even help-groups about it! I wondered if some of my panic/worriedness stemmed from that - I think it's a combination of the ear thing and that. The two things may even be linked it seems!
