Safe to come off betahistine? & eek balance tests!

    Hi there!

I have got some balance tests this week and the letter said I shouldn't take any anti-dizzy tablets for 48 hrs beforehand. Is it ok to simply go "cold turkey" and come straight off them like that? (Betahistine 16mg 3 times a day) Or should I have had a gradual decrease?

Also - the letter said there wouldn't be enough room for someone else to come in the room with me. I am kinda scared by this cos I am a bit claustrophobic - does anyone have any idea what these tests will entail? It sounds like the room's gonna be small
All I know so far is that they may squirt water in my ears.
I wanted my Dad to be right there - I'll be scared if he can't come in

    Hi Katkin,

I would deff call the pharmacist or your doctor and check out the 'cold turkey' approach. But I would think since its this week you may very well have too as it deff effects the results of the tests.

As for the balance tests, dont be fearful, they are not too bad in reality and if as the letter suggets yor dad cannot come in to the room with you have him sit right outside the door. That way as soon as you are done he can be there with you.

As for which tests you will have done, depends on what your ent/gp/neuroto have requested. But probably at the least a hearing tests which is not dizzy provoking. An ENG again this is not to bad its in the dark and you follow a red light with your eyes. The calorics where they put water in your ears is quite quick really they simply pour cold and then warm water in each ear for about 30 seconds and wait for a response. Its pretty quick and will make you have vertigo/dizzyness but for a maximum of about 2 mins and probably less. There are other tests brain stem evoked - wires are taped to the neck and scalp and like the hearing test is not sore at all and does not make you at all dizzy. There is also a rotary chair test which does make you a bit dizzy but not vertigo dizzy well not in my case. All in all I think that you have to take the attitude that this will give you a diagnsosis and any dizzyness felt is brief! Good Luck and let us know how you get on!!

    Hi!
I was VERY nervous about the tests but they weren't near as bad as I was expecting. I did alot of exercises along with the tests that were very intense but still came away not feeling really any worse for the wear. It is hard not to be nervous, and that will make you feel worse. Hope everything turns out good for you!
    What are your symptoms?
    Vicki
