For WOWWWEEEE re Meniere's
Hi There, I did catch your post to me on the relationship board before they removed it. I will try to explain how it was determined that I had Meniner’s Disease, please bear with me as it been quite some time and my medical vocabulary stinks.
I always thought even at a young age that I had some type of hearing disorder – lack of hearing. I remember when I was 18 and had a bad ear infection that I couldn’t’ get rid of.
At the age of 25 was when I was diagnosed with Menirer’s Disease. I had the flu, went to my primary physicians for a check up. When I mentioned my ears hurting, i.e.: fullness and feeling dizzy he sent me to see an Ear Specialists. There became my odyssey of every test you can imagine including putting me on Steroids for heavens knows why and which I had a BAD reaction to and scared the crap out of me. When all these tests were completed I was given a diagnose of Meniere’s disease, I asked what it was and was told
OH, it’s a hearing disorder that is due to either a bad ear infection or heredity (no one in my family suffers from this) at this time I was also given a prescription for Hearing Aids
THAT WAS it! Well, I could not afford hearing aids at that time and was too young or naďve to follow up on this disease.
When I was 31, I had a bad ear infection again, the feeling of fullness that just wouldn’t go away – I called my doctor (the Hearing Specialists) and could not get an appointment to see him for two whole weeks – This caused me to have my first ATTACK. I was laid up on the couch for two days, dizzy, my head felt like a ton of bricks, the room was spinning. Finally got in to see the doctor, prescribed a diuretic to release the fluid build up and I started to ask questions, LOTS OF questions, He advised me to stay away from Salt, Stress, and Swimming. He also gave me a diet to follow which was basically stayed away from SALT – keep it under 1200MG – I tried to keep it fewer than 1000.
I few years later, another Ear Infection – followed the doctor’s orders, I was in his office EVERY freaking week and nothing was helping. I didn’t like him anymore either since all he could do was tell me to calm down – Sure, feeling dizzy, head feels heavy, can’t hear, and trying to raise a son at the age of 6 and he tells me to calm down!
I switched doctors, who ran more tests on me – he almost thought it wasn’t Meniere’s. I was happy to hear some good news but then what could it be? WELL, he confirmed again that I did have Meniere’s; he too puts me on a Diuretic again as the first doctor. For some reason this doctor seemed to help me better then the first doctor who I was seeing for 10 years.
I also decided to see other specialists in Boston at the Mass Eye & Ear – this doctor who I saw almost told me the same thing that I may not have Menieres, but it was concluded again that I did. I continued my own research on this disease and it only depressed me more, also I didn’t know ANYONE who had it and what I did read was not helpful since there was not much I could do for it – other then continue to watch my salt intake, watch the stress level, quit smoking and drinking coffee (which I have not)
This Boston doctor too gave me a prescription for hearing aids but also told me that for my right ear which is the worst it may not help – without them words get confused and sounds are muffled – Well got the damn hearing aids and WELL – I don’t hear muffled words. I can HEAR. LOL
I hope this helps, if you have any questions: please ask and I will check in on this site to answer them.
