Balance problems - not dizziness

Does anyone have balance problems, tho' not dizziness?

My mum, who is 82, suffers from really bad balance problems. She is unable to walk without the feeling that she's going to fall over, and is often steered to the left or right when she walks. If she did'nt have a walking stick she would be falling over. She is a very young 82, and when she's sitting down she feels fine, no problems at all. Its only when she stands up that she's reminded how bad her balance/unsteadiness is. She feels her legs are going to give way and cannot explain to anybody how it really feels.

She's been to ENT, has had an MRI scan and all that seems ok. They put it down to getting older, but I cannot accept that. There must be something more than that. I watch her walk and its not good. We try tai chi and yoga and hope, in the long run, that could help.

All we read about is dizziness, but we never seem to read about anyone that has just balance problems. Please do write if you have them. Would love to hear from you .

I know that off balance issues can be due to ear issues and vision...I would have her check out both. She can get exercises that will help her balance improve dramatically...

Thank you for replying Charlotte.

We have had her balance and vision checkout out, but found nothing. Consultant did a balance test on her and said that he could see nothing wrong with her balance. Its a mystery but I so want to help her as its making her so miserable.

I recall feeling that way just before being diagnosed with low thyroid: my legs felt too weak to correct any imbalance. A physical exam and blood work (T3/T4/TSH) would turn up such a problem, or any one of many other possibilities. Keep looking, doesn't sound normal, good luck.
