Update

So I had my second PT appt today. He doesnt even mention VRT's he relies completely on manipulations. He is doing some cranial spinal thing but it is more like a rieki treament I guess cause all he did was place hands on me and move fingertips along my scalp and pull out my ears etc....He said i basically tries to relax the cranial muscles that tighten up when you are dizzy. I dont know but after 50 mins of laying flat on my back I was wicked light headed and dizzy for quite a while after. But I had it in my mind to buy a fishtank today so I had to go shopping right after the appt and I wanted to try without a valium since I was so dizzy after my appt thought I needed to have that dizziness and get some compensation in. Well I hope you all had great holidays....Xmas Eve was rough and I took a valium as I had hours and hours of holiday visits....about halfway through dinner at my first stop my anxiety was breaking through and i had to get up and go outsdie cause I was sweating and felt faint. But on the upside Xmas morning and to my mother in laws xmas day was not too bad I didnt take ANY VALIUM which is great. So that is my update.....

Re: Update

Great Job...You should feel really proud of yourself.

Can you get a referal to an neurologist? Might help more then the pt...I'm sure what he is doing won't hurt..but doesn't sound like he know anything about vn/labs.

Peace.

Re: Update

Maybe you were accidentally sent to the wrong kind of PT? Or maybe they're doing this on purpose... I think you should definitely ask either the neurologist or the PT. Tell em taht you understand the usual therapy for vestibular disorders are VRTs and how come he's not doing that with you?

Re: Update

What is Reiki

ReiKi meaning spiritually guided life energy (commonly known as Universal Life Energy), an energy which animates us all and is found all around us.
Reiki is a form of spiritual healing using "universal life energy" channeled through the practitioner to the recipient. Reiki helps to harmonize body, mind and spirit for yourself or anyone you want to help.

I can see this treatment may help anxiety, but not dizziness.

Re: Update

What he is doing is called craniosacral therapy. there is a lot of information if you ****** it. It one of those manual therapies that some PTs do that has no evidence behind it, but there are lots of lots of anectodal stories of it being powerful and I've seen it do amazing things. I did try it for a while with a craniosacral specialist. I also just got lightheaded, but I think that was from lying down all that time. It didn't help me, but I'm sure it has helped others.

did your doctor send you there for vestibular rehab though?

Re: Update

Yeah I was sent for vestibular therapy but the therapist said after taking all my info and baselines that he wasnt sure if there was anything he could do for me and that he would try some manipulations and if they didnt help he would have to send me to a specialist in portland. This would have sounded great but.....Portland is an hour and 15 mins away.....most wont accept my insurance no matter how I beg (state insurance) and we are a one income home and a low income as is lol. So say they gave me 2 times a week in portland that means my husband leaves work or has to call in, we have to find sitter, have 30$ in gas and then he would only have 3 full days of work BUT he wont because Thursday and Firday he takes time off to take and pick up our daughter from preschool. So essentially we would have no money coming in so it is just not feasible unfortuanly. Have to take what this PT gives me i guess. He does seem knowledgable about the inner ear just no experience in VRT I guess. But by feeling my ears and stuff he claims he knows which ear affected and stuff he says it is due to tension of the muscles cause by clenching to maintain balance during dizziness...

Well I wonder if it does something for me cause I feel lightheaded right after for about 1/2 hour then terrible the following few days and I dont do much so maybe it is doing something for my vestibular system??

The therapist I saw for cranio told me that if it did help I would probably feel worse before feeling better, so maybe that's a good sign for you.

When it comes to the VRTs, you really know everything a therapist can tell you. Many therapists come up with their own creative ways to challenge the system beyond the evidence-based exercises (gaze stabilization being the most research supported) and they can help you judge that point where you are doing too much or not enough and when to progress. But otherwise its the same ol' exercises you have been doing.
