    Anxiety or the condition?

I'm not sure if some of the symptoms I have are related to anxiety over my current "decomp" or symptoms of a possible "new condition" (MAV) and I was wondering if anyone out there can connect the dots from their own experiences. I've been taking Claitan for about a week now so perhaps that is a factor. I constantly feel cold...really cold. I have a total loss of appetite, on and off slight nausea, my mind is always racing...I feel like I'm on speed even though I really dont know what that would feel like! My head feels heavy in different places at different time. Today its the back of my head. Yesterday I felt pressure in the front. Also, I am constantly looking for moments when I'm feeling off balance and then of course in that split second I actually feel off balance. I'm also very, very jumpy and have interrupted sleep. I'm actually dreaming about my current conditon. So does anyone out there think that some of this is connected to the vestibular issues or has my mind taken over? If its my mind I just dont know how to shut it down and at this rate my own mind may be stopping me from recovering. Sorry for the rambling and the typos.

    Hi Adrienne,

MAV or any inner ear condition can easily trigger all of these problems. I had tons of otogenic anxiety when this started and can still get it sometimes. The important thing for you to do is to try and learn to NOT react to the anxiety by feeling scared about it all. That only makes it all worse and can trigger panic attacks. It's not easy to ignore this junk but it will help immensely if you can while you work on getting well again.

You might want to search for a paper called "migraine-anxiety related dizziness (MARD)". They describe in detail why this is all so interconnected.

    Hi Adrienne
I really sympathise with your problem. I wouldn't say that anxiety was a big problem for me during the first year I was ill but it really kicked in big time after a severe decomp episode I suffered at the beginning of my second year and all through 2007 it took me over - I couldn't think about anything else, just being dizzy and off balance, I slept badly, everything you describe. I was making slow progress with vrt and I realised that the anxiety was hampering full recovery. So I just decided to get a grip, I didn't take any medication, just practised relaxation techniques, deep breathing when I got up and at any time I started to feel anxious and over the next month I started to feel I was getting back control.

It helped that I got to see the right specialists at the end of last year, got diagnosed with vn, have had great customized vrt this year and I now consider myself fully recovered. I now go days without even thinking about it and can do everything as normal. So I don't think it means that you have another complicating condition it may just be severe anxiety brought on by the decomp.
    good luck

    Re: Anxiety or the condition?

Adrienne--when my acute dizzies started, my sleep was completely changed--not from anxiety, but I believe from the condition itself (VN or MAV)...migraine is very much related to sleep and also I believe inner ear disorders can affect sleep, outside of anxiety. The cold feelings could well be migraine, and nausea/lack of appetite apply to both inner ear and migraine. The head pain would be likely migraine. Dizziness pretty much equals anxiety when it is severe.

    Take care,
