Unhappy 6th tube in right ear

Hi. Just wanted to share my history and see if there's anyone out there that can relate or understand it better than I have. When I was a child, I suffered from repeated ear infections. Our family Dr, who was not a pediatrician would just prescribe antibiotics each time and never suggested a tube was necessary. As an adult, my ear infections continued and even when not infected my right ear was constantly clogged, rang, had significant loss of hearing that ear only. I don't remember at what age, but I know I was in my 20s and married when I went to a Dr. for it and on the spot he shocked me by putting a tube in my ear then and there in his office. VERY painful but when I walked out of there and turned the radio on in my car holy cow I could hear it so clearly even when plugging my good ear! After about a year or so the tube came out on its own, which tubes do, and I was back to same ol story but, afraid of the painful procedure, I put it off, just dealt with it for years. Until a bad ear infection and ruptured ear drum in my early 30s forced me to see a specialist who recommended another tube. I asked to be put out for it but for such a small procedure the anwthesiologist would only make me "out of it". During the procedure I don't know what the doc did but at one point I felt excruciating pain and screamed, he swore "****!" And then "sorry about that.." ugh. I think that tube stayed in a couple years. When it came out, again afraid of the procedure, I let several years pass again. Fast fwd to 2007, I was 38. Had ear infection. Woke up screaming in pain in middle of night and discovered my ear was bleeding. Went to ER. Ruptured ear drum again. Another ear specialist again. This one found that the bone in my ear was infected from letting this go for so long, worse case scenerio could have caused an anurism! He tried a series of IV antiobiotics once a day for a week I think. Didn't work. So it was surgery, a mastoidectomy, where he went in cutting behind the ear and folding it forward, and scraped the infection and inserted another tube. Since then, I no longer let it go too long and I have to get another tube put in about once a year, especially if I plan to fly. Just got my 6th tube put in today. Doc just shakes his head about what he refers to as my "magic ear". Does anyone out there think had I had a tube put in as a child it would have prevented these chronic problems? My left ear remains perfectly fine btw knock on wood!

Hi, not sure if it will give you piece of mind or not, but I don't think that having the grommets/tubes put in as a child necessarily prevents needing them as an adult. I've had Eustachian tube dysfunction since I was a kid (35 now), getting tubes put in then, and still getting them as an adult. In fact, letting the negative pressure and infection lapse too long eventually led to a cholesteatoma which I needed to have removed and a stapedectomy to boot. Not to scare you, I think you are doing the right thing having consistent checkups because some people just suffer from ETD.
