    What is wrong with me?

For the last (I think) three or so months, my bowel business has been different. It started with what I thought was piles. Pain/discomfort, blood/ mucus in stools with one very messy stool that had what looked like small clots in it. This cleared away in a week or so, and so did the frequent need to ‘go’. But ever since then I can’t remember the last time my stools were ‘normal’. They have been loose mainly with bouts of diarrhoea in between randomly. I have also had a few dark/black looking stools here and there. Mucus is a feature quite often as well. I’ve also recently noticed food on my stools like banana, raw carrot. Yesterday evening I was at a BBQ and had a couple of sausages without the bun and notice bits of it in my stools last night.

Other symptoms are feeling warmer than usual on and off for periods of time. Aches in my wrists, arms and feet. Also a ‘weird’ sensation in my stomach, like a very mild burning?!

I can be a bit of a hypercondriac at the best of times but am not imagining any of these symptoms. I’ve been to the doctors and had a regular blood test done last week which came back normal. I felt no better and decided to go back yesterday because I noticed I’d lost 7 pounds since last Friday and around 10 over all the the last two weeks. Although I did suddenly cut out all rubbish (chocolate, crisps, beer, fatty/fast food etc). I am 294 pounds btw.

Doctor says he can’t explain the aches and pains as blood tests didn’t show up any signs of arthritis etc and he can’t explain what’s going on with the bowels so said the only other option is to send me for a colonoscopy to check for any ‘inflammation of the colon’. Sorry to labour on, any advice will be gratefully received.

(I feel somewhat silly posting this having read of some people suffering for years with similar/worse symptoms.)

Re: What is wrong with me?

Your symptoms are very suggestive of possible inflammation in the bowel, so a colonoscopy is exactly what you need, IMO. This has been going on for some time, and with the burning in stomach and black stools, you should probably have an upper endoscopy as well to check for bleeding ulcer, H pylori infection, gastritis, etc. Any bowel change such as this needs a thorough work-up and blood tests are just inadequate to evaluate this problem. You may be having a colitis associated arthritis, and the warm feeling may be from fever or inflammation or both. This is serious stuff, so please call your Dr. and ask for the colonoscopy/endoscopy referral.

Thanks for your reply Ladybug. The colonoscopy is booked for 12th June, but I'm nervous that's too far away. I'm going to go back to the doctors this morning as I'm not feeling right at all. I went for a meal with a friend yesterday evening and had grilled chicken, rice and salad at a Turkish restaurant. I thought this was a safe option healthy wise and stools wise. It was as if half way thorough the meal I could feel the 'weird' sensation in my stomach. By the time I got home I was straight on the throne and had a very watery diarrhoea stool. For the rest of the night I didn't feel well at all. Fever returned, burning in the stomach and just a general weird feeling to the point I was thinking of ringing 111 for advice but it finally eased off so I didn't. I've just 'gone' and it was not as loose as before but still with onions etc present. Will update later. Thanks again!

Glad you are seeing the Dr. today. Yes June 12 is way too far off and the Dr. may even want you in hospital for faster work-up. In the meantime, I would avoid all roughage in the diet (salad, rough, raw, high fiber foods). Stick to bland soft things like oatmeal, applesauce, yogurt, noodle soup. The salad is probably what triggered the diarrhea last night. Hope you get this checked out ASAP and feel better soon!

    Hi Ladybug,

Went to doctors this morning. The blood counts and other tests all came back normal. I told him my symptoms and from yesterday and he said it seems like a viral infection and to just drink plenty of water?! I also told him my concerns about waiting until June 12th for the colonoscopy and he almost literally shrugged it off and said that I'll be fine till then....?! I did have a pencilish/loose stool today. I had plain boiled oats for breakfast.

Re: What is wrong with me?

Personally I would see a different Dr., a gastroenterologist if you can. Viral infections don't last 3 months. Otherwise, be prepared to go to emergency room where you will get the attention you need and get a decent diagnosis. You cannot diagnosis your symptoms by blood tests alone. I'm sorry your visit wasn't helpful and you got the brush-off.

Here in the UK you can't self refer to a specialist unless you pay private which can be pretty expensive. I woke up this morning and popped to the shops. On my return there was some 'wetness' down there. On inspection it was a funny smelling fluid. There was also bright red blood specs on the tissue although this could have been from my vigorous wiping. I've had this stuff on and off for over ten years so not sure if it's entirely related or just coincidental. I'm going to take your advice and go to the accident and emergency department tomorrow afternoon and sit and wait it out. Hopefully I'll get a diagnosis that way!

Re: What is wrong with me?

I visited the doctor today and received the last of my blood test results, which have all come back normal/clear. Even a particular one that the doctor said he was looking for as an indicator as to whether i have inflammatory bowel disease. He did a 'back passage examination' and he said that looks fine. He said he very much doubts it is bowel cancer given my symptoms, age etc but to alleviate my concerns has asked for my colonoscopy to be brought forward to two weeks time. Fingers crossed it's done soon and comes back clear and I can get on with IBS which is what he said it most probably will end up being. He also said my other symptoms (fever etc which have now passed...) could have been a non connected viral infection. Thank you for your advice and support thus far, will update in a couple of weeks post colonoscopy.
