Unhappy abdominal cramping pain/shoots through rectum

Hi all. This has started happening quite frequently to me and I am wondering if it is a symptom of IBS. I will have severe cramping just hit me out of the blue. Nothing will ease it up... I try sitting on the toilet and the pain shoots clear through my rectum and nothing happens. It lasts for several hours, sometimes a day or so. The best way I can describe is I feel like I am full of gas and it's just building up with no release. It just intensifies. Thanks for any input you may have. I will be 43 in November if that may help with any answers lol.
