Question I wish I knew?? irritable bowel/spastic colon

:I have been having some problems lately with something and can't really tell what it is??? I had a colonoscopy back in and around the springtime of 2003 ..which is this year....and was told I had three polps which were taken out ...and that I had diverticula and or diverticulosis. and the upper gi was looked at and I have an ulcer in my stomach and into my tube...I havent had any problems from this just the burning occassionally in my stomach and reflux.....I mainly know that most of my life I have had spastic colon and irritable bowel....I knew this by my diagnosis from other dr's....and my symptoms....gas, bloating...alternating diahrea and constipation with cramps...I got use to it actually.....no problem....then suddenly lets say around sept I began sweating profusely....I thought it might be that my estrogen wasnt absorbing...and that can happen when I do have bowel problems...so I wrote it off....then not long after that...I had this weird bowel movement..which felt hot and was quite yellow....it kind of shocked me...not that i pay that much attention.....but I had that over a period of time ending with diahrea and pain that I cant discribe...which wasnt cramps...it was pain in the rectum....I thought it might be from some virus I caught..and it went away...then later in about oct, I woke one morning with diahrea and it persisted and then ended with that same pain...in the rectum...I thought that it was odd to have that kind of pain when I was only having diahrea.....then I felt really funny or kind of strange...I went in to the dr and he without checking ...just looked at my records and diagnosed diverticulitis....so he prescribed the usual....flagl and levaquin....two antibiotics....and I started on those....I had to cancel a plane trip ...I took this stuff for 7 days...made me ill.....then two weeks later I went on the trip I canceled only by car...and within two hrs of the place I was driving too..it hit me again....this time..I went in to emergency....and they tested me...well, I had no fever...actually low fever like 97.6....and no high white cell count...and since I didnt live there...I was prescribed the same t hing...this time..flagl with cipro...antibiotics.... and actually...after I went in the first time...later while taking the antibiotics I was given a white cell count which wasnt high and given a ct scan....of that area and it came out normal but that was 12 days from the onset and 4 days after the 7 day antibiotics....so....I started on the second batch of antibiotics...which totally took the ph out of my skin...in my mouth and in the rectum area....I took it and I dont feel any better....while taking it..I didnt have diahrea.....just soft bowel....I had pain in the front of my lower stomach...where the bladder is...also...I had problems with my sciatic nerve in my back and this thing activated the pain in the lower back where the tailbone is and pain down my back of my legs...so, I feel something there right where you might say the bladder is...the first time I had this there was blood in the stool..and it looked bright red...like it came from something lower down...and the last time I had it there was no blood....only when wiping....I do have hereroids...and they swole up bigtime especially while taking the antibiotics....my husband said it sounds to him like I may have some big hemeriod a little higher up and it is inflamed and I passed anything and it hurt....well, that is all fine and good..but....why am I having diahrea....I do have spastic colon and Ibs...I can toss that up to what is going on...but the lower pain...however, when laying down on the dr's bench...they press and there is no tender feeling.....only cramping with the bowel movements ...which is now severe after finishing my second bout of antibiotics....and the pain which is worse when passing the last of the bowel which is usually diahrea.....if anyone knows of anything that sounds like these symptoms....let me know....it could be very simple....I have had surgery in the past...I had a hysterectomy....so there is no uterus....I did go to my pcm..which is primary dr and he is sending me to 3 specialists....gyn..for women and gastro dr ...and I forget what the other is..surgeon..maybe...I want this to be over....let me know your thoughts....thanks

    Vickie,
Spasms in the colon as well as the rectum is usually caused by a lack of Magnesium in your diet. I think you probably need Magnsium and Calcium along with Vitamin D for absorption. It will help calm your intestines down and help the spasms and cramping.

From your message it is not clear to me why you were given 2 rounds of very strong antibiotics. If I had taken them --- I would be very SICK---I would had a big problem with a yeast infection because the friend bacteria in my intestines would have been cleaned out almost completely.

I would have diarrhea, bloating GAS pains when eating almost anything as well as pain caused by spasms and cramping.

I would have to take an anti- candida medication, probiotic supplements, eat lots of yogurt to re-balance the friend flora/ bacteria in my gastro-intestinal tract.

I would also need to take a stool bulking agent--- water soluble fiber like Metamucil -- that would slow down the diarrhea.

thanks for the reply...I guess maybe that the magnesium and calcium etc would help the spasms...I will take that...the cramping is bad...when I go....but I always have had ibs and it wasnt that awful....just this weird thing that happened a couple of months ago and seems to be hanging on.....I noticed something different when I started sweating profusely....then I had the bout of painful diahrea...where the tailbone area hurt really bad...inside and out....so I was given immediately the antibacterial drugs....they thought it was diverticulitis....becuz i have diverticulosis....the small pouches and they th ought that it was infected....however when I went in with it...I didnt have a fever or hi white cell count that would show that I had an infection and I would have had more pain when pressing on my stomach....its weird...but I can feel like something heavy down low in the gut area...it is affecting my bladder and whats left of my female organs....so I await an authorization by my pcm to get me to other specialists to see what is up....so...I will keep you posted...who knows it could be wierd stuff.....I do have hemeroids and do have adhesions from my hysterectomy surgery I had years ago...who knows my bladder could have fallen and is laying on everything..you never can tell....anyway the sooner the better that this thing is looked at.....thanks vickie
