IBS hereditary?

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone knows if IBS is hereditary?! I have an older daughter that experiences diarrhea some days, 4 to 5 times a day. I had heard that Fibromyalgia is hereditary and since IBS goes along with it, I thought it might be. Any thoughts would be appreciated!?!

Re: IBS hereditary?

Hi Aaronon,

I've posted many times in the past, so you may be aware of my unique stance on what IBS is. I personally believe that while IBS is more likely to affect you if a near and dear individual is affected by it, it is not a hereditary disorder. I also believe that fibromyalgia is also not a hereditary disorder.

My reasons for saying so are related to my beliefs about IBS and fibromyalgia.

Cheers, Raju.

Re: IBS hereditary?

Oh yes, I have heard many a story of people whose entire family or at least many members have been diagnosed with IBS. Remember, IBS is kind of a "catch all" for any GI disorer that doctor's have no answer for. For all we know, people that suffer from IBS may be suffering from any one of many disorders that the medical community has not found a reason for yet. Lots of research his going on to figure out some of the causes. Some of those causes could be hereditary in nature. We are just scratching the surface of the many reasons people have GI disorders that are not Chron's. colitis, diverticulitis etc..

Re: IBS hereditary?

Both myself and my mother suffer from IBS and tbh it would make sense for it to be hereditary.

Re: IBS hereditary?

Hey guys and gals,

Thanks for your replies! My mother has diverticuli, and I have IBS. My stepmother has Fibromyalgia, and I have that too. My mother has a host of other things also, and is currently in the process of finding out if she has Lupus. I think IBS and Fibro, for that matter is hereditary. I'm hoping for a cure soon.
