Anyone have IBS pain on right side?

    HI all,
I have had pain on my right side for years. U/S shows all is normal. Dr. states that I have IBS based on other symptoms but my question is does anyone have frequent pain on their right side? I had read it is on the left side of abdomen and was just wondering if this is unusual or what? Thanks!

I had right-sided IBS since childhood (infancy, maybe), bad enough to require several hospitalizations & lots of diagnostics showing nada.

I've been pain-free & IBS-symptom-free for almost 2 yrs. now, since removing gluten from my diet. Not all IBS is diet-related, but for some of us finding dietary triggers & removing them has been 'our miracle.'

Has your doc recommended anything for your pain & other symptoms?

    Best wishes.

Thanks for the reply. I have had this pain for years as well. It is not very bad...I just feel it. Had Ultra sounds but nothing. So, he has prescribed nothing. I thought it was my liver but thew pains were too low to be that. My case is very mild in regards to pain although I do feel nauseous almost every day. Do you know why some people get it on the right while it is most common to have on the left? Thanks!

Sorry Ladyj, I really can't answer the question about why some of us are righties, some lefties. Could there be anatomical variations in some of us?

I know that Crohn's disease is typically a left-sided pain. Maybe some of the lefties are drifting towards that.

Right-sided pain can result from chronic appendicitis, a low-grade thing. But I'd guess they ruled that out for you. You can also have chronic low-grade gall bladder inflammation that gives lower right quad pain. Usually it give upper rt pain, but there are exceptions. When they did your ultrasound, did they do upper right as well as lower?

Have you had a thorough pelvic exam recently? Not an ovary thing or malpositioned uterus?

    Best wishes.

    elmhar,

Yes, I have had everything checked and all is fine. I do have something on my liver but Dr. said that has nothing to do with the lower pain. Thanks!

Several years ago, that's what they thought and tests came back neg. I don't know if that's where gas gets stuck or what!

I assume you have had a pelvic CT scan with contrast. That shows more than a US would show for certain things like a bowel anatomical problem. Have you had colonscopy, etc.?

Re: Anyone have IBS pain on right side?

IBS is a miserable disease to have to contend with and many doctors do not have the patience required to deal with it because the degree of pain does not always tell the degree of seriousness. Some people's gut can look all torn up on visual examination, with pus and bleeding and infection and the patient does not feel anything more than a little gas. Other patients can have terrible pain and no obvious looking reason for it. The terrible thing about IBS is that the pain can come and go giving the medical community the idea that it is cured or controlled when the pain might have gone away without treatment at all. One of the major links with pain is the use of laxatives, opiate painkiller rebound, and dehydration. The number one thing I found out about IBS is that ground black pepper is a real irritant that most people would not even think about since the granules are so small, but if the granules are larger it does not hurt as bad. Check out your preprepared foods such as fast food and restaurants of any kind and see if your food has ground black pepper in it. Also microwave stuff will have black pepper as well. It tastes good and so a lot of people use it without thinking much about it being an irritant.

Hello, I had pain also on the right side for almost ten years, the doctors said it was IBS also. All test said it was nothing. I knew that it was something more. Finally I insisted on staying put in the hospital until some test showed something! well the very next day a surgeon looked over the test and I immediately was rushed to the emrgency room and was in surgery 30mins later. I had Gallbladder disease. All the test kept saying that It was funtioning normal, but finally just one time it was abnormal. I know had I not stayed at the hosp. and insisted the test be repeated every 30 mins, I probably would still be suffering. However I now am dealing with left side pain. I actually have to see a speacialist 5/22/06 Best of luck to you. Lisa
