How are you? Are you okay with it? I think it will be the best choice for now. Maybe you could start a food/symptom journal today. Hang in there. Without the pressure of possible embarrassment at school, maybe your anxiety will go down and you gut will have a chance to calm down and begin some healing. Let us know how it goes....I'm pulling for you!

    Hi -
I was actually looking at another board but saw your message. I don't really even know how to do this as I'm very new at these "boards." I have another issue I was looking for - but - I have a daughter who also has IBS. She started at the same age as you - 8th or 9th grade. I completetly understand your frustration, pain and difficulties with the entire situation. I don't have a magic cure but will tell you that it's "not in your head" (and yes, her dad thinks it is) but I do have some suggestions. These are things I did and my daughter did. If your mother understands, enlist her help. If not - have your doctor/nurse/other relative be your advocate. Get a written statement from your doctor explaining your IBS. Go to the principle and put it in front of him - make arrangement (with his help) with your teachers for things like taking tests and missing class without problems. Talk to your teachers about a "signal" that you can have simply between the two of you where you can quietly leave the room if you need too. My daughter did and still does homework in the bathroom! (she's in college now - community - smaller classes, more control) Yes, you're going to have some major meltdowns. It IS frustrating at times. Be good to yourself. Fried foods, heavy foods are very hard. We're trying some naturalpathic things now...too soon to tell. Make sure you have been tested for some basics - gluten, allergies, etc. Some medications can really help people - find a doctor that you're comfortable with that will take a younger patient and be your own advocate. This is hard stuff for a young person - it's hard on anyone but there are many worse things to have (I know, I know - that's a lame statement) Try not to stress about going out with friends because of the bathroom - a good friend will understand. Have sleepovers at YOUR house where you're comfortable and can have food around that won't upset your stomach. My daughter has both kinds of IBS so it's a battle - it's very individual. I hope some of this helps. I'll try to find you again, but no matter what, keep trying to find ways that help - ask, ask, ask people or read whatever you can. We're still searching but there just has to be something that helps out there. Good luck.
    IBS mom.

Did I already mention Colostrum? Boy, it sure helped set things on the right path for me. It actually healed the lining of the colon. And then I was able to use other remedies that controlled the D and C.

    Hey tummyproblems,

Sorry if I missed this, but have you been to a specialist, i.e. a gastroenterologist, and had a full workup done on your digestive system? I had stomach issues (diarrhea, bloating, gas, pain, etc) for my entire childhood. I went to a gastorenterologist when I was 21 and he really helped me. My problems turned out to mostly be due to lactose intolerance, but with IBS thrown in for good measure.

If you have been to a traditional specialist and are still having problems, I would definitely seek out the help of a naturopath. They might be able to prescribe something non-traditional for you.

You really sound like you're heading down the path of becoming homebound, which is no good especially for someone of your age. I was afraid to leave the house for fear of being somewhere with no bathroom, and I felt paralyzed. Not fun. It sounds like you've done a lot so far to help yourself, and I encourage you to keep trying.

I read through some of these posts and sad to say that I know exactly what you're experiencing. IBS has taken over my life-was home-bound for a VERY long time-got back on my feet and was "normal" for over a year and then fell flat again-which is where I am now. Tried specialists, herbal remedies, and everything else under the sun. The thing that I think helped me the most was a yoga class that I joined and committed to-although VERY expensive at this place-but I love it...
My question is: Has anyone tried any of the colon cleansing products out there? I was thinking about it as a last ditch effort sorta thing but I read so many conflicting reviews online. Thanks everyone!
