    Question Could I have IBS?...

Greetings! I am scaring myself half to death because if I don't have IBS I fear that it is ovarian cancer... Here is my story:

About a year ago I started having bad gas, always at night, out of no where. I then began to have stomach pains, diah., and always felt sick to my stomach. I went and had a colonoscopy, celiac test and other blood work done for the "belly tests", and a hida scan. Thankfully, the doc's said my gall bladder was functioning at less than 1% (no stones) and had to come out. I am only 23 yrs old (female) and the docs were surprised but sent me to surgery.

Life was great for 4 months after surgery. Now I have gas (only at night), if I have a bowel movement daily it is in the morning and it is never just once (I get the urgency to go 2-4 times in a row or within an hour), girgling in my lower tummy, and pain on my sides - as if I can feel everything going down my desending colon (I know that sounds bizarre).

I have found no relief and the doc's look at me like I am just making it all up in my head. I don't know if it could be IBS or symptoms of ovarian cancer as they have changed my birth control due to spotting since january and sent me for a pelvic MRI as I have a small cyst on my uterus.

Any advice would be wonderful.. Thank you so much for reading this!

    Hi Nervous,

Poor you. You sound like you're at your wit's end. Did you say you had a cyst on your uterus ? or your ovary ? A cyst on the ovary is not unusual as we grow follicular cysts on our ovaries every month. You being on the pill means you should not be ovulating but it is not at all unusual to ovulate while on the new brands of anti-ovulants (they are not as strong as the old ones). A cyst ON your uterus is perhaps something that may need to be followed with regular ultrasounds. If the cyst is IN your uterus, this might be a fibroid perhaps (get a copy of the radiology report and see what it says).

If you have gas issues only at night then I really doubt it could be something like ovarian cancer (ovarian cancer symptoms do not occur only at night but all of the time and they get progressively worse in a short amount of time ... weeks). Perhaps it is a bowel motility issue that you are dealing with. How late do you eat your evening meal ? If possible try to have a few hours between your last meal of the day and when you go to sleep and see if this helps. You may also want to try peppermint tea in the evening as this helps to reduce bloating. Cammomile is also excellent for digestion. I take a combination tea of camomile and peppermint in the evening and this helps me immensely. There are also medications that help with bowel motility but you would need to see your doc to see if you are a good candidate for these.

If you have a sensitive bowel then you will have to accomodate it. Drinking plenty of water, especially with your meals, will help. If you need to boil it in order to tolerate it then do so (perhaps with a bit of lemon and honey). A fibre supplement like metamucil, once a day, is also helpful as are probiotics (in supplement or natural form). Regular exercise, perhaps in the evening after dinner or first thing in the morning, to help your bowel motility is a great thing too. Also, watch what you are eating. Sometimes you can have problems with digestion and / or absorption of certian foods (like dairy and wheat products which are notorious for this). You can always take digestive enzymes that will help. Have you tried these things first ?

I hope you will find a solution soon.

    All the best.

    Re: Could I have IBS?...

Hi, your story sounds almost exactly as was mine at your age. It took about 15 years, many surgeries, and many specialist visits to FINALLY find something that stopped the cramping, urgency and what felt like spasms in my colon. The magic was simply fiber capsules. I started taking them well above the recommended dosage (two capsules in the morning, and two at night) and I ended up taking them for about three years straight before recently taking myself off them. Before that, as soon as I missed a dose, I would RUN to the bathroom...then I would be like - oh yeah, I forgot to take my fiber...

Also what has helped since I have been off the fiber is a very healthy diet. I RARELY eat fatty foods (seemed to be a trigger for my episodes) and I eat a well balanced diet. Lots of fruits and veggies. I hope that is the answer for you...for me after YEARS of PAIN, it was like a miracle.

    Re: Could I have IBS?...

Hi nervous,I forgot something sorry . It does sound like IBS to me .I also have stomach pain worse than child birth, cramping, nausea, sometimes vomiting,Flu like fealing. Had it for years, Had a colonoscapy all ok. The dr's didn't say well lets look into something else so I just thought ok then. And I new it went with alot of ilnesses etc. so I didn't ? it. Then my rummy said they can do something for that. So I went again after years of torcher. They found I had bacteria infection or something like that. He put me on 2 different meds for two weeks and I dont have that info for you. Then he gave me hyomax as needed and align. It has help me at least 50%. And he said that was all he could improve it . But you have ro put a common denominator to it . Like keep a diary of food that may cause it. I myself couldn't find only one and that was to much salads at once when I was dieting. The rest of it I blame on illnesses. It's worth looking into! home sweet home
