pregnancy & IBS

I have just found this site, and I am excited to have already learned so much by reading the posted messages. I was wondering if anyone who has IBS-d has experienced pregnancy. I have been heavily medicated for the past 6 years (paxil, elevil, bentyl) and have left them all behind to try to become pregnant. However, I am getting a crash course in dealing with IBS all over again as I went many years with no meds in the beginning of my IBS. It is horrible living with this pain again. The mental anguish is unbearable. I have panic attacks, anxiety, aggoraphobia, etc.. all because of IBS and how it makes me feel. I am finding that there is nothing SAFE to take and be pregnant so I was wondering if anyone could share their experience???

Re: pregnancy & IBS

Hi Samsauntie!

I have IBS and I had a baby almost 3 years ago! I too have anxiety problems (agoraphobia was bad for many years). I was on Paxil when I got pregnant and came off as soon as I knew. (withdrawl symptoms were bad that lasted about 2 weeks).

The strange and great thing was that my IBS was gone through most of the pregnancy!

I had "d" once, I think! I was more "regular" during the pregnancy than I ever was in my life! My anxitey was barely there as well.

It's as if my body needed to be pregnant in order to be "normal"! I know that sounds strange but it's seemed to be true!

I wish you lots of luck! I'm here if you need to talk!

Re: pregnancy & IBS

I have the "severe diarrhea-type" of IBS and had my daughter 10 years ago. I had stopped taking my Bentyl while trying to conceive and had a tough time trying to control my diarrhea. However, during my pregnancy, my diarrhea was almost gone. I should add, that I had "morning" sickness 24/7 for 9.5 months and only gained 9.25 pounds with my 8lb. 3oz. daughter. So...I don't know why my diarrhea was gone...the pregnancy or the fact that I almost NEVER was able to eat anything. I don't have the anxiety that you have, mine is only the cramping/pain/diarrhea type, so your situation might be different than mine.

Good Luck.

Re: pregnancy & IBS

I had my baby 4 months ago and had NO symptoms at all through the whole pregnancy; unfortunately, it has been at it's worst ever since having her. Hope your situation is different! Good luck!
