Re: i feel i cant live with this anymore

I think you need to be on a water soluble fiber supplement like psyllium husk. It is a stool forming agent and is safe to take daily. Just drink enough water daily. It will help the diarrhea!!!And, make you regular.

You may also need to take a probiotic supplement and eat yogurt that contains live active acidophilus to help re-establish the good bacteria in your gastro- intestinal tract. I think your digestive system is not working properly because the friendly bacteria /flora is out of balance.

God Bless---Harry

Re: i feel i cant live with this anymore

Hi my name is kristi, I haven't posted anything yet so I don't know what I am doing. Anyway I am 21 and I have been dianosed with IBS. I feel awful too. I feel sick to my stomach on a daily basis. It made me lose my job and it's destroying me emotionally. I don't enjoy life anymore. I am afraid to eat because when I do all the probs start and last all day. I was also diagnosed with Chronic Gastritis, non-ulcer dyspepsia, erosion, and have H. Pylori. My Specialist said the H. Pylori isn't causing any of my symptoms. If you or anyone has any knowlege or info please reply here.<p>[This message has been edited by moderator2 (edited 07-04-2002).]

I tried fiber and it didn't work for me. I'm still looking for something that works. I sure hope you find something!! I think I might end up losing my job because of IBS. I work 30 minutes away from my home and sometimes I just can't be away from the bathroom for that long!

Re: i feel i cant live with this anymore

Hi, all. Your symptoms of eating and then running to the BR sound much like mine. I am now under control and have been for about 8 months due to a prescription drug called Colestid (pill form); Questran is the powder form. Talk to your doctor and see if it will work for you. I also take fiber, calcium supplements, multivitamin, and acidophilus and can honestly say I haven't felt this good about my IBS in YEARS!!!

Keep us posted,
Katie G

Katie, how does acidophilus help IBS? Does it help with the stomach bloating? Thanks.

Re: i feel i cant live with this anymore

I also take Acidophilis and it can help bloating. I helps IBS because it contains the bacteria Lactobacillis and a mixture of other bacteria that are 'gut friendly'.

I don't know whether you know that your gut contains several different types of bacteria and these help in the digestion of food and other activities? Well, if you have IBS or an upset stomach or take antibiotics for some reason, then the flora in you gut can become out of balance and this is why you can have gas and bloating. Taking a Probiotics supplement or Acidophilis can put back the good bacteria into your system and help all these symptoms.

I take them regularly too and they have really helped my stomach.

Good luck

Re: i feel i cant live with this anymore

Hey I understand how you feel and it seems as if your whole world is topsy-turvy when you have IBS or are constipated all the time. I've gone through this for many years myself. I wouldn't eat out afraid that would trigger something but even when I didn't eat out it seemed as if it happened anyway. I finally went and had a colonoscopy done but they found nothing and that was quite annoying. The doctor just said that I suffered from IBS gave a few suggestions and sent me on my way. Thanx alot Doc! Things that I try that have helped me in the past are:

1. Prune juice (nasty but works) for quick relief but I had to learn to do things consistently so that I wouldn't need to drink prune juice as a quick fix. I knew that I needed to be regular.

2. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables (make sure you eat your green veggies and plenty of it. Or atleast as much as you can)

3. Staying away from rice, pastas, breads and junk foods (they only made things worse for me). I still eat them, just not as much as I used to.

4. Drinking water, water and more water. I used to get so tired of drinking water because I was a soft drink girl, but now I find myself drinking it all the time even when I go out to restaurants because now I don't feel right if I don't drink loads of it. You know that they normally recommend 8-8oz. glasses a day. I know that it sounds like alot but if it will help.... DRINK IT.

5. Learning to be consistent with eating fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. What I used to do is eat or drink just enough of the good stuff to get myself going again and then fall back into the same rut of eating a bunch of mess. I had to learn to be CONSISTENT because being constipated is no joke.

6. Adding fiber supplements if/when necessary. I usually take a fiber supplement daily because it's just that FIBER. It's not a laxative and you shouldn't form a dependency. It just helps to have that extra certainly can't hurt.

7. When I do need that extra umph...I usually take a herbal laxative, cascara sagrada and that works as well. It's very, very mild and gets the job done.

8. You may want to try going to a health food store and get something to cleanse yourself. Start from scratch and then keep a monitor of what you put into your system.

9. I also try to keep a daily log of what I eat including snacks because I don't always know what it is that triggers me being constipated. That way I can back track figure out what I ate around the time it started to happen and try to weed whatever it is out of my diet.

10. You may want to try and stay away from those soft drinks but if you find that you can't try to double in water what you drink as far as soft drinks and that may help to balance things out a little. If you drink 8 oz. of a soft drink make yourself drink atleast 16 oz of water. This is just something that I make myself do so that I can keep myself on track.

11. Try to exercise as much as you can because that helps to keep things moving. I used to think that folks just said that, but it really works.

12. Try drinking green tea and you may want to try getting it from one of the asian health stores or somewhere like that because the others that you buy from the regular supermarket is just not the same.

13. Don't sleep on your vitamins. Take your vitamins DAILY. I take a multivitamin daily and it gives me what I may be missing out on when I haven't eaten enough of the good stuff. But it's not a substitution.

13. Buy apples, prunes, raisins and whatever has helped you in the past and keep them in your home and if you can keep some at work too!

14. Try to find out about everything that's high in fiber and go for it!

15. Please stay away CHEESE...PLEASE...PLEASE!!!!!

Those are things that have helped me and I hope that they can help you as well because as I said before being constipated or suffering from IBS can mess up your whole world. If I think of anything else I'll let you know. Take care and good luck to you.

Re: i feel i cant live with this anymore

Excellent suggestions. I would only like to add a little to the list. First, #9 "keep a daily log of food", I would move to the very top of the list. As ginette said some things will work for some people but not for others. That makes the personal food journal most important; find out how your body responds to what you feed it. Make notes about each meal and snacks, too. Select a spiral notebook with a sturdy plastic cover you'll be opening several times each day. Carry it with you everywhere. If it isn't recorded it didn't happen. Make notes about emotions which seem stress producing. The second change to your list is to encourage everyone to avoid their food allergins. Again this will be different for everyone; we all react differently. The food journal can help there, too. I used to drink my tap water after filtering it, however, something changed (perhaps the town changed a treating chemical) and my body didn't like it. Don't ignore the obvious and be diligent playing detective. It is most import to avoid your allergic foods. Some foods you just might be intolerant to them. This will possibly allow you to eat a very small amount of the food. Pay attention to how you feel after the meal 1/2-one hour especially. A new item to the list would be to get yourself an acupuncturist and a naturopathic doctor; mine have helped me a bunch.

There are 3 types of IBS. A) Predominately diarrhea as the main symptom. B) Predominately constipation, and C) Alternating between diarrhea and constipation.

I've had type "A" IBS for about 3.5 years before I began slow and steady improvements. My food journals have helped record my progress, allergins, bad assumptions, and the results, too. I keep my journal daily for about 9 months. Then I took a year plus break and decided to press into obtaining more progress. I'm at about 90+% normal functioning. I'm excited about it, too. I encourage you to pay attention to your own reactions.

Happy "hunting".

Re: i feel i cant live with this anymore

I would go with food journals too. I tried eliminating various food from my diet and then went and had some food intolerance tests done. Found I was intolerant to gluten, wheat, yeast and lactose. Having cut these out, my stomach is a lot better.

I think you will see that I always advocate alternative therapies especially acupuncture and homeopathy. I have used homeopathy and have regular acupuncture and have found them both great. My acupuncturist is great though. He is a really academic guy with a doctorate in physics. He was ill for a long time and conventional medicine failed him badly, so he turned to alternatives and found that Chinese Medicine and acupuncture really helped him, so he decided to train in it and now here he is so many years later helping me.

Unfortunately, in this game, you have to be your own detective and no anyone else.

Good luck.
