Diagnosed with IBS, but I think I have a parasite!

I'm hoping this thread is still active and I can get some answers!

I traveled quite a bit in the last two years, several times to the Virgin Islands. After coming home to the states, I began having severe stomach issues that eventually subsided (I was just starting a new career and was high-stress, so I assumed that's all it was). A few months later, however, I began seeing what could only be described as "rice" in my bowel movements. My general care doc did cultures and blood tests that came back negative, but to her credit, she did say those tests can be misleading. She referred me to a specialist who told me--with no testing whatsoever--that I have IBS and not parasites.

Without more testing I am completely unconvinced that I have been diagnosed. I have been reading about people with similar problems who simply go online and buy antibiotics like Flagyl or Mebendazole. I'm nervous to take drugs without a prescription, but I'm at the end of my rope! My husband and I are hoping to start a family soon, but we can't do that until we know I'm healthy. Any advice about how to handle this would be great. Thanks!

Sorry to hear you are not well. I would either ask your GP to reorder more stool tests (and try to get the rice looking things in the samples you submit) or to try antiobiotics.
Last year we went to the Galapagos Islands and came back with something horrible. I would eat and then 1/2 hour later get pain on my left side and then diarrhea. My primaryDR. put me on Cipro for one week. It did not help. Meanwhile my sister who went with us got put on Mebendazole (??Spelling) (??Methazdone )and got better. So I asked my Dr. for that. She finally gave in and I got it!! Felt better within one week
Maybe just tell your Dr. your sister went too on trip, and she got put on this medicine and is fine now!!!!
And if it doesn't help at least you know its not parasites!!!
    Good luck!

Thanks so much for your reply; I may just have to make up a sister to get a doctor to listen to me!

Speaking of which, what kind of doctor did you see, just a GI specialist, or one in the infectious diseases field? Both the doctors I saw before looked completely clueless when I brought this up. I'd like to find someone who has dealt with this before.

Thanks again, glad to know getting better is going to happen!

I never got past my GP, my primary care Dr. She ordered the medicine after I emailed her that my "sister got well on that M. medicine" I didn't even have to go in!!!
I really hope you feel better...but keep in mind it may NOT be parasites and then its back to the beginning to figure it out!!! Agh!!!
    Good luck!!!

Wow, consider yourself lucky (if there is such a thing in this situation). I'm more upset that I can't get a doctor to really talk to me or test for this. Another question if you don't mind: did your doc have any concern about liver flukes or do any follow-up testing? I guess I'm looking for the process of being completely cured since I'm hoping to get pregnant soon. Thanks again, talking to someone else is definitely helping me to get motivated about seeing another doctor.

Re: Diagnosed with IBS, but I think I have a parasite!

BTW, all my stool parasites test came back negative too! But the meds killed something off for sure because I got better.
I would try to get better from this first. THen if I was you I would go for a complete physical to make sure you are healthy and explain to the Dr. that you want to get pregnant so you want to make sure everything is ok. Also I would start taking Prenatal vitamins now, they are very good for you and will get the vitamins you need in you for sure before you get pregnant.
    Best of luck!
    Anna
ps. the dr. did a complete blood panel on me but everything was fine....
