2.5cm renal mass found
During a random CT scan, my liver doctor found a 2.5cm cyst on my left renal pole. I had a second scan done and he is now telling me it isn't a cyst but a mass and "most likely" benign. He is now turning me over to my GP and he will make the decision what to do next. I have noticed that I am having some pain in my lower left back every day and wondering if it is the mass I am feeling. I am hoping someone who has dealt with a renal mass could give me some answers. Should I just sit back and wait or see an Urologist? Since I am feeling some pain, could it mean something worse. Does a benign mass usually have to be taken out? Thanks for you help because I am worried.

Re: 2.5cm renal mass found
I would be assertive about getting this checked out. A nephrologist would be the best specialist to see and your GP could recommend one unless you already know a good one. A urinalysis would be helpful, and the nephrologist may recommend a kidney biopsy to see what kind of tissue is in the mass. This is done without an operation, through the skin after local anesthesia. I would not just wait and see, I would get this checked out now with your GP or by getting a referral from your GP. Your GP should be able to talk to a nephrologist and expedite an app't so you don't have to wait too long.
