Playing hockey and felt a "pop" in my knee

    Hey all,

I was diagnosed with a possible Bakes Cyst in my knee about a month ago.

The pain comes and goes, and is primarily behind my knee.

I was playing ice hockey Saturday night, and as i went to turn to go for a puck from a standstill, my skate caught a rut and I felt a pop in my knee and had immediate pain. I hobbled to the bench and was able to gingerly put weight on it after the game. I can't straighten it completely, and have pain about a 6 on a scale of 1-10 when i bend it past 90 degrees. It hurts like hell to get up and the first few steps are agony. If I am sitting, it hurts behind the knee, on the sides and In my quads. The pain has gotten a little better, but still having a lot of it.

Has anyone had this kind of issue? Any help would be appreciated.

I am hoping nothing is torn and its just possibly the Bakers Cyst popped.

I have an ortho appointment Wednesday to see what is going on. When i call them today, the nurse said "yea. you need to get in right away." Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

Sounds like a text book torn meniscus from your symptoms.

    I hope not.

This stinks. It was my second game back after two months off after having my gallbladder removed. A buddy of mine who works with orthopedic surgeons pretty much said the same thing, probably a meniscus tear

I hope not either. Did you have a bakers cyst before? They usually come bc of injury in the joint anyway. The new trend with Ortho surgeons that keep of with what research shows is not to repair/remove a meniscus tear if it's in an area where it can heal. Even you have surgery the healing time is not that long. Unless they repair. If they repair it its several months. Are you less than 30 or a professional athlete? Those are usually the indicators for trying to repair instead of doing a menisectomy and also the location and size of the tear.

Didn't have a bakers cyst before, but had issues last year where the knee would catch if I was walking down a slope and would feel a little unstable. Also a few weeks ago, I got my foot caught between two pallets and ended up twisting my knee.

No professional athlete here. Lol. Just a 37 year old beer league hockey player.

Re: Playing hockey and felt a "pop" in my knee

So I visited the ortho surgeon today.

Had X-rays done and they came back negative. The only issue is some arthritis.

Asked him if the cyst could have made the pop in my knee. Told me that it would more than likely just leak out instead of tearing.

He is pretty sure that I damaged the meniscus. He gave me a few options. A brace along with a steroid shot into the knee (which was painful as hell) or an MRI or both.

I chose both. I just want to get to the bottom of this. So now I wait to get the authorization for the MRI, then a follow up appointment to discuss treatment options.

Had my MRI on Sunday and my follow up appointment with the orthopedic surgeon.

MRI show a clear medial meniscus tear. Next step is surgery and rehab.
