    aching,weak knees

both knees, hips and front of my thighs are extremely weak and ache almost alwaysI have trouble getting up from a chair .this started about frour years ago and has gotten worse.Xrays and MRI indicate no probable reasons. The Orthapedic Doctor said exercise is the only option. Just walking 50 feet tires me out, but i'm ok after a short rest. What are some possible causes.I'm 86 and have always been active

    Re: aching,weak knees

Hi formermarine! First of all, thank you for your service to our country!

I'm 77, so, if I am lucky, I have some catching up to get to 86.

I had the same trouble getting up from a chair, or the toilet! I've always done a bunch of weight lifts, but because of my obvious weak legs, I started knee bends and working out on a stationary bike.

I do 900 weight lifts per day (two 10 pound hand weights) and 750 "weighted" knee bends, and do 30 bike pedaling 10 times, at max, per day (two sessions 5 times each). As a result, I no longer have problems getting up from a chair, or climbing stairs.

Keeping oneself physically independent and capable is worth it's weight in gold, especially for us elderly!

    Regards, Bob
