chipped patella

I landed directly on my kneecap when I was gracefully trying to get off the exercise ball. It hit the hard floor. My knee appeared bruised and swelled up. I went home that night and iced it. I could walk on it fine and still can. When the swelling went down, noticed the feeling like a chunk had been taken out of my knee cap. Being kind of unnerved by it, I called and made an appointment with the doctor. I was x-rayed and thats when I she told me I chipped my knee cap. She was going to have the radiologist measure the size of it and contact me in the middle of the week (which was last week). I sounded like I might have to go to an orthopedist. So a week goes by and I hear nothing, so I call the office. The doctor wasn't there, so they were going to pull my chart and have her look at it when she was in. Monday goes by, nothing. I called again today.

Someone puts me on hold and gets my chart. The person over the phone and reads it to me all in medical ease. Granted I grew around it and work in healthcare, I still need it in layman's terms. Basically the jist of it was was telling me what I already know which is that I did not break my patella. I ask what the course of treatment would be. I didn't really get much of an answer. I hung up rather frustrated. I told them I would start running again and I didn't get any disagreement. I'm not experienced in this type of injury and I have some questions. Should I follow up with the doctor? Should I get another opinion? Does the bone grow back? What about the piece that's chipped off? Where did it go and should I be concerned? Can continue my usual exercise activity? Anyone who has experienced a direct blow on top of the patella?

Re: chipped patella

I dont know much about the chipped bone off your knee cap. BUT i do know that the bone fragements that have chipped off with float around your knee joint and can end up getting caught within the joint which can cause your knee to lock. SO generally id say that has to be cleaned up and get all the bone fragments out of your knee.
I would deffinetly though rest it a bit dont over do it, over doing it just does not help my knee caps arent in place in either knees, and ive learned what happens when you push them anyways. NOT fun!

i would personally see a specialist orthopedic etc, because its always good to get there opinion, and ifone doesnt listen to you find another. my first ortho was a complete jerk didnt listen. Second ortho who i actually saw before saw me once then got new xrays and booked surgery within 6 weeks i have surgery now, which is a blessing to finally have this cleared up. but deffinetly if you have chipped it the fragments can cause you trouble.
