    Question Lateral Release Knee Surgery

    Hi message board members,
I have recently found out that I need to have lateral release surgery on my right knee. My knee cap keeps slipping out of place and the knee itself is swollen very bad and is painful. It also gives out on me and I have arthritis and a cyst in it. My question is to anyone that has been through this type of surgery is: What is the recovery time like, how long do you have to wear the knee mobilizer and was there a great amount of pain? I am so ready to be relieved of this pain, but I have heard that there is alot of P.T. and recovery after the surgery. Also is done outpatient? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
    Greatly waiting,

    Re: Lateral Release Knee Surgery

Hi. I had a scope and lateral release done on my left knee last September. I had to wear the knee immobilizer for 2 weeks after the surgery. The surgery was outpatient. There is pain after the surgery, but for me, it was a different kind of pain than the pain before surgery. It was less intense. The total recovery time for me was 5 months, but I developed bursitis in my knee during the recovery process.

I have also developed the same issue of kneecap subluxation in my right knee along with a ligament issue and meniscal changes, so I may be facing surgery again. The subluxation doesn't seem as pronounced this time, but the surgeon figures that it is only a matter of time.

I hope that I answered some of your questions. If you have any other questions or need clarification, please feel free to ask.

    Re: Lateral Release Knee Surgery

I had a lateral release on my right knee several years ago. My recovery time was long. The surgery was outpatient and I did my own PT at home. My knee is fine now. Good luck to you.
