    Chronic knee tendonitis

I've had a problem left knee for many decades, the result of a long ago car accident. I've had extensive PT on it and it will feel fine for a while, but then it starts hurting again. I've been taking glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for a year and it does seem to help but my left knee has been extremely painful for quite a while and it feels like what I am dealing with is possibly chronic tendonitis. I can't afford to see my orthopaedic surgeon, however, because his practice has changed to where I am charged as if I am in the hospital just to see him in his office, complete with a room rental fee, outpatient fees and the doctor's professional fee and I have a high deductible insurance plan, meaning a routine doctor office visit could end up costing in the hundreds or thousands of dollars, which I don't have right now.

So I am wondering, aside from taking a lot of NSAIDs for this problem, what other management strategies are there for dealing with this issue? I am tired of the constant pain I am in and it doesn't help that I have a very physical job, on top of everything else. I'll be 53 years old in a few days, am female and the leg that has the bad knee is one and a half inches shorter than the good leg, the result of said long ago accident. I do wear corrective lifts on my shoes. I know that my female anatomy makes me more prone to knee problems but I wonder if there isn't something I should be doing aside from the usual ice and NSAIDs to help it.

I had an MRI on that knee a few years ago and got a positive diagnosis of osteoarthritis, which is why I am taking glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. But this doesn't feel like arthritis pain, it feels more like tendonitis. The pain is located above the kneecap up into the lower thigh area. I've been bothered by it for quite a few months now and would greatly love some relief from it!
