Right knee pain, popping and cracking

    Hi-

I am new to this board.

I have been having problems with my right knee. It is painful at times, when I squat the wrong way, sit down, get up out of bed sometimes, extend it fully. I got a cortizone shot from my family doc which didn't do much of anything. Then I saw an orthopaedic PA-C and she put me on Mobic which hasn't helped much either. I had X-rays, I just don't know if I will be able to get the report to the other doc in time. They said they could do them at the new doc but the PA-C said I am too young for arthritis- I don't believe that. I have a brace which helps a little but I am still in discomfort and pain depending on how I move. I am seeing an orthopaedist tomorrow from another group and will see what happens. I would like to be active but this knee is holding me back!

    Anyone have similar situations?

AMYB- funny thing. i have been on these boards for several years (70 yrs old now). i have never had a knee problem before and after doing some extensive cleaning in our 4 floor barn, my knee started to click and now with slight pain upon twisting it in any way. seems like i had this problem about 20 yrs ago when golfing. my doctor then told me it would probably get better and low and behold it did in time. i am already on mobic for my neck and have not has anything else done to my knee. here's hoping the body heals itself once again. oh yes, i do have an ace elastic knee band i can wear. it doesn't seem to help much either but reminds me not to overextend my knee.

    Hi Amy,
The x-ray should give you a pretty good idea of what's going on in the knee. If you are having crunching sounds it could be bone on bone, your doctor might also order an MRI. That's what I had. You didn't mention your age, I am 52 and I thought I was too young for this but what it really comes down to is quality of life. If you cannot do things that you want to do perhaps it's time for surgical intervention. You mentioned Cortisone, there are also other injectable products on the market, such as Synvisc One. I had that shot several times over the last couple years and they do buy you time if your knee isn't too bad. In each case I got about 6 months relief per shot per knee. Just some thing else to think about to postpone surgery.

I'm now 10 weeks post-op on a right TKR and although there have been some challanges I'm glad I did it. So glad in fact, that I'm planning the left next month.

    Hi Jersey Boy-

I used to live in Jersey LOL

I wonder if the doc would inject Synvisc One after I had the Cortisone injected?

I had an Xray which this new doc doesn't have the results of yet but I had a MRI last week and I am seeing the new doc this morning and he will have the results of it. he thinks it is bone on bone, crepitus.

    thanks

    amy, 33 - soon to be 34!

Amy, where in NJ? I grew up in Gloucester City and my wife is from Patterson. As for Synvisc, I think you will have to wait at least a little while (couple weeks) between shots.

I used to live in Morristown.

My orthopaedist is recommending lateral patellofemoral release surgery. I am shocked - I didn't expect this but I guess this may be for the best. I have thinning cartilage and a kneecap sliding to one side. Oh well, I think I will go for it. Scared though.

I definately get the scared part Been there done that! I'm not sure there are words to put you completely at ease, but I will say before I had my first TKR at the end of March, I was completely freaked out. But now, after having been through it, I have no apprehension in having the second TKR done, scheduled for July 7th. Look at it as having a problem go away, sure there will be some pain, but it isn't the same kind of pain your having now. Healing pain is different somehow, you'll see Just do what your doc tells you and work hard in PT, if you go. I'm sure you will be fine. When is your surgery?

Morristown, South Jersey near Mt Laurel or North Jersey?

Thanks Jersey Boy. Yeah I am scared but I find these boards to be really helpful. I am going for another opinion tomorrow even though I am pretty sure I am getting the surgery. I think my surgery is about a month away.

I will keep this thread posted.

I lived in Morristown, Morris County, North Jersey.

Re: Right knee pain, popping and cracking

    Hi Jersey Boy-

    Yeah, up there!

I like the other opinion. He said that surgery wouldn't be his first choice - maybe try pt again or a cortisone shot in the joint but when he asked how I felt and i told him I was at the end of my rope and I felt I should go for the surgery, he was ok with that.

I have decided to go for the surgery, instead of trying pt again- I tried it once and it didn't really help, so why waste my time? I have some support, others not as much, but this is my life, my body, my knee and I think that this can really help me.

I think I will go with the doctor who I originally met with because he is closer to where I live even though I like the second opinion doc better. I have heard good things about the first doc.

    Thanks,

    Amy

Re: Right knee pain, popping and cracking

Sounds like you are at peace with your decision I think that's the most important thing you can do. Now you do understand that after surgery you will have PT right? And if they don't offer it I would ask for it.

The reason I say this is because in 1999 I had my knee scoped and PT wasn't offered. Shoot, the doc then didn't even tell me to ice, so as a result I didn't do either and I think I suffered for it.
