    Recommendations for labral tear?

I have been having pain in my left hip for about 5 months. The pain ebbed and flowed. When I didn't exercise - very little pain. When I work out, the pain is horrible. Finally went to see a doctor today and he believes I have a labral tear and will require surgery. My questions are:

    1. Should I have surgery and not try conservative treatment (i.e. anti-inflammatories, PT and cortisone shots)? The doctor believes the pain will continue to come and go when I am more active.

    2. Based on some of the posts, I am worried the pain won't go away or will be worse, so why have surgery?

    3. Finally, does anyone have recommendations for surgeons that do this type of surgery in the Chicago area? Or, should I travel to a doctor that is the best?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
