Hip & Thigh Pain. Hip Bursitis?

Hello everyone. I'm trying to get myself back to normal (or close to it ) I haven't felt good for years. Multiple things going on & trying to figure out each one at a time. I am 33 soon to be 34. I feel older than I am

about 6 years ago, I had a partial hysterectomy. I have one ovary. About a year after surgery, I started having mood problems. Just a few years ago, found out I was either low on hormones or they were none in my system. This was after being diagnosed with bipolar & trying most of the meds for mood disorders. With none of them helping. I went on a hormone replacement cream & my mood has improved. For the past year or more, I haven't felt good. Running low grade fevers, just feeling very BLAH, tired, and just not well. With other symptoms. Ended up needing gallbladder surgery. I'm feeling excellent compared to what I was. No more fevers, or feeling ill, no more full feeling under my right rib.

My left hip & thigh hurt really bad. I can't get comfortable at night while I'm sleeping. I toss & turn at night quite a bit. When I change positions I have to really work at it with my left side? The cramp in my thigh is constant & it also hurts in my back end up high. If I sit on the floor for more than 5 minutes I feel very ill. If I sit on the couch or in the car for to long, my hip & thigh hurt also & sometimes my foot falls asleep. But, it's only on the left side.

My husband says he thinks it's a nerve & there is probably nothing that can be done. I'm not sure if it's worth going to see a doctor or not? I no that he can't understand the pain I'm feeling. And couldn't imagine there is Nothing that can be done?

I was at the park with the kiddos a couple days ago. I tried to swing & couldn't use my left leg to help get myself swinging?

The only thing I really no to do at this time is take magnesium, potassium & calcium?Which I started doing a couple days ago.

Anyone have experience with any of this?Any advice is appreciated

Re: Hip & Thigh Pain. Hip Bursitis?

Hi Mom...think we've talked elsewhere. Just to give you reference points, there are 4 main bursas in the hips. On each hip, you have a big one on the outside of the hip, just below the hip joint. Trochanteric bursa. And then on the backside, you have another right where you sit....right on that area where you put the most weight on a chair. Ischial bursa. The pain can travel and go up or down the leg. Can hurt even when you aren't moving or on one of them. If this matches any of your pain areas, then seeing your primary can help as they can do a cortisone shot into them and that can bring the inflammation way down if not get rid of it completely. You should be able to find an exact spot where the pain is at a maximum.

It could also be from your back and be sciatica. The sciatic nerve is the largest in the body and combines several nerves from the lower spine as it travels through the buttocks and then goes down the thigh to the lower leg and foot. It can become compressed from many many things including muscle spasms in the low back, actual injuries to the spine or even anatomical problems like it getting caught in the muscles or fascia of the low back.

Sciatica can stay in one place(usually the buttock on one side) or it can show up anywhere along the nerve all the way down to your toes.

But from what you describe, I suspect it is bursitis. Sciatica generally gets better when you lie down but bursitis can get worse as you roll over onto the bad bursa. And it is really bad pain. I have it chronically in both hips on the sides but the ones on my bottom have responded well to a cortisone injection.

Go see your primary doc and see if he/she can diagnose it and treat it.
they are huge bursas so even a primary doc can hit that with a syringe full of cortisone. Heck, I could hit it if I had the guts to inject it(I don't).

Re: Hip & Thigh Pain. Hip Bursitis?

Jenny!Hello!Yep, we have This website is a great place!I have been dealing with this for quite some time & it is not getting better!
A bad pain shot thru my thigh last night when I was putting on my shoes. I can put my right foot on top of my left thigh perfectly fine. No pain or soreness, nothing. I put my left foot on top of my right thing & I can't bend my leg at all. I normally just deal with the pain & go on after I tie my shoe. This time the bad pain shot thru my thigh. And it hurts like something severe!I told my husband I have been doing research, and it could be something else than just a nerve. I'm going to call the Dr Monday.
Thanks Jenny, for all your support
