i am a 21 year old college student, and i am experiencing moderate to severe pain. The pain starts from my buttocks and travels sometimes all the way to my heel. the sensation feels sort of like i am stretching my leg constantly, even when laying down it doesnt stop. it is only in my right leg, and when i walk i cannot move my right leg more then a foot or two in front of me, like say trying to kick. If i do, i get very severe pain all through my leg and it simply wont go any further. when i do try to stretch the muscles in my leg, i feel tightness or pain in my lower back.
i wish to keep attending school, but its becoming very painful and hard to focus. please help. thank you for your time.

Re: strange leg/hip/knee injury, need help :(
Welcome to the board and sorry to hear of your pain. Just one question, when lying on your back presumably you cannot raise your painfull leg very far. How far can you raise your leg if you have your knee bent ?

Obviously we aren't doctors on this board...your best bet is to obviously go to the doctor and talk to them about it. We can all guess what it could be, but the only way to be sure is to see a trained professional.

One test for sciatica is whether you can walk on your tiptoes. If your heel keeps dropping, it could be sciatica. If not, it could be a pulled or sore muscle in your leg which is causing the pain and stiffness.
Ice and heat may be helpful, but if it is persisting, you do need to get it checked out.

Then that tends to absolve the hip. It certainly seems to be something which spans two joints, ie the sciatic nerve. As Jane says, see your doc.
