About to have a TKR and I have an UTI, is it safe?

I am scheduled to have a TKR this coming Monday, in two days. I have been feeling run down for two weeks so I went to the Dr today and they discovered I have an UTI.

I have had a lot of bladder issues in the past, so this is not that surprising. Whenever I am run down, I seem to get an UTI.

My worry is infection and getting infection into my new joint. They gave me a three day script of Cipro (today is Friday) and said it should be cleared up by Monday morning. I check in for surgery at 6 am Monday morning. I asked if they would test my urine again before surgery and they said no. They said women with UTIs are not a reason to delay surgery.

This is scaring me to death. How dangerous is it to go into a surgery with an infection like this? Also if I get them chronically, is this a stupid idea that I am getting the replacement? I'm very nervous about this surgery. It is coming up in a matter of hours now.

Infection won't get into the joint unless it's in your bloodstream, and a good strong dose of antibiotics should prevent that.

For the future, especially the first year, just make sure that any UTIs are treated promptly. Don't let an infection go on.
