    pinched nerve in groin

My dr told me I have a pinched nerve in my groin but I am skeptical about his diagnoses.
I have no pain in my groin but I have pain in my thigh, its like a burning pain. I can't stand or walk for long as the pain gets worse. If I am out shopping and I get the pain I have to sit and rest for 10 minutes and then I can continue with the pain decreased. Is my dr right with his diagnoses?

I should have mentioned that I have limited hip movement. I can't cross my leg over as it just won't go but it causes me no pain. I can't put on socks as my leg just won't move so I can do that. I can't even lift my leg so I can put on socks. This is only with 1 leg and this is the same leg that I have a pinched nerve in the groin

Where is the pain in your thigh exactly, front side back?, and do you have any changes in sensation. Does the pain go beyond the knee.

Pain is along my thigh at the front and goes towards my knee but not to my knee. The pain is a burning sensation. The pain is relieved when I sit down.
When I walk I do so with a limp, i feel as though I have one leg shorter than the other

Could it be that you need a hip replacement? Did your doctor do an x-ray of your hips?
The groin pain makes me think "hip problems". Was this your primary caregiver or an orthopedist?

    Re: pinched nerve in groin

    HI,
I have had MRI's of my hip and spine. It showed that I have 3 bulging discs in my lower spine.Xrays have shown nothing wrong with my hips. I have seen orthapedic surgeons, neurologists, various other dr's and specalists. Noone can tell me why I have such limited movement in my leg/hip.
At times I feel I should get my leg amputated as the pain gets so bad. lol

I too have a history of pain at the front of my one thigh. It comes every few months, lasts for a few days and then just stops, at times for years. The severe burning pain only lasts for seconds with several episodes a day and only at rest. Having had it for years it is presumably nothing lifethreatening. You message made me scour the web and search some medical journals and make some sense of this condition. It seems pain in the frontal thigh which reaches only to the knee can come from the second and third lumbar vertebrae. So pain will come from 2 and 3 nerve roots, the hip joint,a muscle flexing the hip called psoas and the adductor and quads muscles. The psoas also has a bursa which can also be painfull. Another cause which can give pain but also only weakness, enough to make you limp, is arteries being narrowed. This is probably rare and most likely happens to those who are or have been smokers. Generally the pain comes on with activity and settles quickly with rest. A good test is to measure how far you can walk on the flat and have to stop and compare the same pace on a gradient which would bring the symptoms on more quickly. If your condition is arterial claudication it should happen everytime you walk that same distance at the same pace, give or take a bit of distance. It seems in "The old days" tight corsetts could press on the upper thighs and cause nerve damage, also becoming overweight can do similar damage. You most likely have no muscle weakness, the docs would have picked that up at the exam. Being unable get your socks on is nearly always caused by lumbar pain or hip and or knee restriction, I would have thought this would be easy for a bone doc to tell you.
Really interesting, keep us in touch.

    Re: pinched nerve in groin

thanks for your interesting reply. It doesn't matter if I walk on a flat surface or a hilly surface, the pain is there. Even just standing anywhere for a length of time the pain starts.
Its a rather complex and difficult problem with my hip. It doesn't give me any trouble when I walk or actually do anything other that try to lift my leg when I am sitting.
My various doctors are concentrating on my thigh pain. When my doctor presses on a certain spot in my groin i nearly jump through the roof but on the other side of my groin I don't feel anything when he puts pressure on the identical spot. My right leg is affected but not my left. The doctor seems to find the sorest spot everytime he touches it. He has tried cortisone injections but they give me no relief either.
I am taking a tablet called LYRICA and that has helped but its expensive. LYRICA is a nerve pain drug. He told me if I didn't have nerve pain then LYRICA wouldn't work at all and it does work but I have to keep taking stronger doses and at $160 a month I am finding it hard financially.

    Re: pinched nerve in groin

The good news is your arteries are OK. If your pain increases in standing around and relieved on sitting and you get pain on palpation I would suspect an inguinal hernia. This hernia is known for not being diagnosed well or quickly, often it is based on everything else being fine. Injecting wont help. Go and see your practitioner and ask him to refer you to a surgeon who specialises in hernias.

    thanks for your advice James.
A few years ago I had 4 heart attaks and then had an angiogram which showed an 80% blockage in my aorta. I then had 2 stents put in the vein. Could this have caused a hernia as it seems it could be in the site they did the angiogram in?

    Re: pinched nerve in groin

If your doctor has given you an injection into the groin then I would think he suspects a haematoma in the groin region. When you have an insertion into an artery there may be some bleeding and this blood has to be absorbed and I suspect will take some time. Unfortunately this small area can give symptoms which can mimic several conditions.
