Fluid Leaking From Knee
I have had a fluid build up on my knee for a couple of months. My doctor did look at it and told me not worry, it would go away on its own. There is no pain with it. Now a small would has opened up on the knee and a reddish/ clear liquid has started to leak out. If I press on it it squirts out. It still has no pain but the amout of fluid that comes out makes my pants leg quite wet. I have been putting a bandage over it to soak up the fluid. Is this something that will stop on its own, and should I worry about it? Will it get infected? Thanks in advance.

Re: Fluid Leaking From Knee
Okay, if there's so much fluid that you've developed weeping sores, this is a problem, especially if the whole knee is visibly swollen.

Yes, it could get infected. If you have diabetes, seek medical attention promptly, as this could become serious. Otherwise, you could try wrapping the knee with a firm ace bandage to reduce the swelling. Elevate your leg when not using it, and reduce salt in your diet. Call your doctor again and let him know the problem is not improving.

Have you had a physical exam recently? How is your cardiovascular health?

Re: Fluid Leaking From Knee
Just had a full medical. Cartiovascular is good. No diabetes. The wound that has opened up was at one time a small calus from a bone chip that I had and worked out of the skin. It started to leak after I was doing some home renos and spent a lot of time kneeling. My job did have me kneeling a lot also. Also since the weeping has started, the swelling has gone down by about 75%.
