muscle pain above both knees

hello everyone .Iam 82 yrs old next month and have had a full knee replacement in may this year.My knee seems fine ,but I am getting a lot of muscle pain above both knees for the last 2months after exercise .My phsio says it will go away eventually and says the pain shows that the muscles are being worked ,ie no gain without pain ! I am getting the pain but do not see any gain .I am wondering if my age is preventing my muscles recovering from the previous days exercise and have limited my exercise to walking only to approx 2 half hr sessions /day apart from general jobs about the house etc
.I am also walking in the local swimming pool for 20mins every other day .Hopefully this will gently strengthen the thigh muscles and allow me to walk without pain .For those of you who have had a knee replacement and our close to my age bracket i would appreciate your experiences thro the recovery stages especially if you have had upper thigh pain and discomfort in the process
