Question First time with Hip Bursitis, does it go away?

My hip started hurting gradually, it almost felt at first like it was catching. Then the pain came and has increased to the point that I have slept only 4 hours in 5 days. It became so bad last night that I was in tears. It went all the way down my leg and out my foot. I actually ended up taking 3 lortabs and a muscle relaxer during the night, and they didn't even relieve it any. I have had 1 cortisone shot but it did nothing and the pain has even got worse. Does Bursitis stay? I have always had a high pain tolerance even with several ruptured discs in my spine but the pain I had last night was the worst I have ever had including major surgery! I have no idea what to do for it.

I have it too and my ortho said no but the cortisone shots help after the 2nd and third time. I hope you feel better it can be extremely painful.

If it is truly bursitis, then the cortisone shots are your only alternative. Could it be sciatica instead? If so, a chiro could help with that.

Bursitis usually responds to round-the-clock NSAID therapy. The inflammation needs to be checked, and pain killers won't do that. Consult your doctor about the kind of NSAID to take, and the dose. Take it faithfully for the time he specifies - usually at least 2 weeks, even once the pain is better.

If that doesn't help at all, look into other causes besides bursitis.

Re: First time with Hip Bursitis, does it go away?

Missygt, and others here, any more ideas on bursitis? I have had it before and it always seemed to clear up with a cortisone injection. This last bout is much worse. It has been almost a year and I am really getting frustrated. I think most of my friends a family think of it as a minor ailment and probably think I am being a baby. The pain is awful. I have gone to orthos, PT, spine specialists, acupuncture and now back with the chiro. They feel it is secondary to my spinal problems, but can't really clear those up due to the bursitis. I went to Europe in the spring and with all the walking and stairs, I felt that I could barely walk. The pain with each step gets knifelike. I am going to Italy in four weeks and hate to have it prevent me from seeing the sights. I am seeing my GP on Friday to get a script for a Medrol dosage pack. Seems like everyone says it just comes back, but I feel like I need even a few days pain free and a good nights sleep. Any suggestions? Thanks all, Barb
