What is the best way to cover knee in the shower after TKR?

    Hello,

I will be having Total Knee Replacement next month and was wondering what is the best way to protect the bandage
from getting wet in the shower?

Also, what kind of bandages and tape do you use to cover the incision when not bathing? I would like to purchase these items prior to surgery.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

After each of my 9 knee surgeries, I would cut the bottom out of a heavy trash bag and then put rubber bands around the top and bottom. Never had a problem with my incisions getting wet.

Or, you could by a bag they have out now that essentialy does the same thing. I saw them at CVS recently.

I also did the cheap grocery bag and a couple of pieces of elastic solution. Works and no fuss with drying bags out as fresh one next shower.

    Ok thanks!

What kind of bandage dressings did you use on the wound area outside of the shower? What about bandaids, did you use special tape?

I was sent home with the correct water resistant dressing in place. This was replaced after 3 days and I was also given a spare dressing if it was required. The plastic bag while showering is necessary extra protection.

I was able to shower 24 hrs after I left the hospital without having to cover my incision. My dr did use surgical glue on the incision which is probably why I could shower without covering it.

My wife was told not to shower for two weeks!. So she sponged bathed it for that length of time. She washed her hair everyday in the sink. With my hip they allowed me to shower the very next day. Different doctors, different ideas. They were very insistant that the incision not get wet and felt there was no guarantees with some of these protection products or a plastic bag. Her incision didn't seem totally closed to me so we heeded his advice and she made it through with no sign of infection.
