They postponed my surgery due to high pressure

I'm really bummed out. I just got a call from the Laser centre that was to do my surgery on April 14th and they have postponed my surgery. They want my optometrist (who is on holidays for two more weeks) to send me to a glaucoma specialist. The pressure in my eyes is quite high but I also have very thick corneas (some of the thickest they have ever seen). I was told that if one has thick corneas they also usually have high pressures so it seems ridiculous to have to go to a specialist. I just had a test for glaucoma done back in November and all was well. :(

Anyway, I just wanted to vent. I'm really bummed about this cuz I have been so excited about not having to wear glasses anymore.

im sorry to hear it was postponed for you.. but im sure everything will turn out fine..its just an extra precaution im sure.. just look at it this way, youve waiting so long already, whats a few more days just to make extra sure?? id be bummed too though.
it's interesting that you mention the thick corneas.. i have been unable to get contacts ever.. so i just wear glasses, and i always thought i probably couldnt get lasik either for the same reasons i couldnt get contacts..but i jsut went for a consultation and the main thing concerning him was that i too had very thick corneas and i thought they might be too thick.. did anyone mention that to you? i wouldve thought the thicker the better. i still havent heard back and im pretty nervous and trying not to think about it. just thought id ask

I was told the thicker the cornea the better in case they have to do any further surgery down the road. The only thing with thick corneas seems to be the high pressure. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what a specialist says.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone else that has thick corneas or high pressure.

pugwinkle,
I don't know much about the thickness factor about your cornea but, one thing I wanted to ask is wether you were really nervous during your exam? That can also contribute to your high pressure. Mine was slightly elevated during my exam because I was so nervous that I might not be a candidate and I was going to be broken hearted if I wasn't. Anyway, my nurse just told me to take some deep breathes and try to relax. I did so and my pressure went down to normal. You may have been a little worked up. Next time you go in, if you are a caffeine drinker, don't drink it. If you are thirsty, try water or a non-caffeinated, not terribly sugary beverage. Do everything you can to calm yourself down and see if that helps some. I know that the corneal thickness has something to do with their worries about when they are going to cut the flap. They don't want them too thick or too thin. But, I think there is some new technology they use now in those situations in which they actually cut the flap using a laser. You might ****** "corneal flap thickness" and see if that tells you anything. And maybe include the words lasik and lasek in your search terms.

Good luck and I hope everything works out well for you. Just remember to try to relax and see if that helps. Try to talk yourself into staying calm until after the exams...and then you can allow yourself all of the nerves you want! Heheh!

Take care and let us all know how it goes!

Hi, thanks for responding to my post. No I wasn't nervous at all. I have had several pressure tests done in the past four months and it seems all the tests are high. They even checked back several years with my previous optometrist and my pressure was high back then as well. I suspect with everything I've read on the subject my pressures are high due to the fact that I have extremely thick corneas. I guess I will just have to wait and see what a specialist has to say. I'll be sure to let you all know what the outcome ends up being for me.
