    Do I really need custom Lasik?

    I recently went to a local doctor because I am tired of wearing glasses. One of the first questions that I asked was how much it would cost me. I was immediately told that it would cost around $4,000. That seem to be far more than prices that I found online. I was quoted that price before I was even examined. That price was for custom lasik when I was really looking for standard lasik. I pressured them for a quote for standard lasik and they eventually told me that it would cost about the same. Shortly later they told me that my eyes were bad enough that I wouldn't even qualify for standard lasik anyway.

    I am being ripped off? Should I go out of town and get a second opinion?

    I am interested in any response to this question too. I'm shopping around for Lasik and have been given prices for "custom" lasik as well as "traditional" lasik. I am also finding that some practices have gone back to the blade for cutting the cornea and are shying away from the laser because of lack of accuracy. I feel like there are so many variable and it's overwhelming! $4000 seems a tad high for my area, it's more like $3500 and even as low as $3000 for both eyes. I would recommend a second opinion before you decide on anything.

    Its fine to shop around but do not let the price dictate the surgeon or procedure that you eventually choose. A cheap price will soon be forgotten once the procedure is done. The most salient advice I can offer is to spend your time finding out who the local eye doctors are going to. Word gets around among the brethren and if you want to know who to trust, who does the best job (not necessarily the cheapest) then ask those people.

    I completely agree with this post. I had Custom Wavefront Lasik done in 2006 and it cost me $4000. I didn't shop around because I knew the surgeon had a fantastic reputation and I wanted him to be the one to do my surgery. I definitely would not go to the "cheapest" surgeon. I would go to the one with the best reputation. It's your vision, it's worth it. By the way, I live in Massachusetts, and I think $4000 is about the standard rate for a reputable surgeon around here.

    Yes you should!
    Hi! I had conventional Ilasik ($4,500) done on 1-15-2010 - I was minus -12.00on each eye so I couldn't have the custom view/wavefront version done; Please DON'T let money or advertising be the determining factors for such a life changing and irreversible procedure as Lasik; Custom view/wavefront improves your outcome and decreases the potential for post-surgery complications particularly halos and dry eyes. Why would you let money decrease your success rate? I did extensive homework and knew I was in the hands of the best surgeon in my area; my doc put me through pre-testing hell ( I'm glad he did) which included two other docs and a retina specialist; I see 20/20 (left eye) and 20/30 (right eye) now but am having dry eye and tired eyes challenges - my recovery will be a LONG time and it takes a lot of patience. I'm exceeding my doctors expectations as they don't normally obtain my results with the refraction that I had. I am NOT YET ready to recommend Lasik to anyone - it's much more involved than you might think;
    good luck to you - remember - I've been there - THIRTY years of contacts and glassses;

    My particular surgeon only does custom lasik. I had it one week ago and couldn't be more thrilled with the results!

    I agree with this post. I had Custom done in late 2007 (in Massachusetts) and it cost $3800 but I was able to get $500 off. I'd pay more for the better reputation for my peace of mind.
