A question about blood work with Leukemia

Just wondering... when you get a cbc... and the doctors suspect Luekemia... is there always a rise in white blood cells. I mean... if you do have Luekemia would your white blood cells be high? Would your red blood cells be low? Thanks for the information!

In leukemia, the white blood cell count can be increased, decreased, or normal. Hemogoblin, red blood cells, and platlets, however, are almost always low. Anemia in acute leukemia happens in most patients and is often severe.

In the beginning of Leukemia the white cells go high, but they are malformed and the programming(somewhat like a computer) has a glitch that causes the white blood cells to attack the red blood cells or crowd them out so that eventually there are not enough red blood cells. Then as the leukemia progresses, the bone marrow and other organs such as the spleen and Thymus start to malfunction and then the white blood cell counts start to fall as well. All this time, if the Leukemia is not being treated, the body is undergoing attacks from viruses and bacterias that the white blood cells are not able to fight due to the programming glitch that is causing the leukemia. So sometimes the patient dies from bacterial infections etc. The stem cell transplants are helping some to recover from the leukemia by giving the patient new stronger red blood cells and white blood cells without the glitch.
