bilirubin 23.5 / ALT 600+ / AST 300+
On 3/8/04 my 41 yr (healthy all his life) brother had a stem cell transplant for leukemia (dx on 9-26-03). Due to the radiation therapy prior to the transplant, he had to have many pain relieving medicines for about 3 weeks. He was maxed out on dope.
His bilirubens have (for the past 2+ weeks) been in the 20's. As you can see his ALT and AST levels are astronomical. He is lethargic, at times. He is weak, but trying to walk every other day. He can be somewhat delusional.
The doctors no longer walk in with an encouraging smile. One doctor actually told my dad that my brother's liver can heal with time, but they were unsure if my brother had time on his side. Great.
I, myself, have inquired about bililights. One doctor said that he thought of those, too, but they don't have ones large enough. Another doctor poo-pooed the idea off.
Does anyone have ANY ideas for my otherwise healthy brother to recover from his acute liver failure? I am not sure how much time he will have left. The toxins appear to be clouding his mind more every day.
Thanks-
