    hepatic adenoma rupture

Just recently diagnosed w/ multiple hepatic adenomas, I'm looking for information. First, what are the chances of rupture or hemorrhage? What are the symptoms of rupture? (I'm becoming paranoid, I realize). Next, should I be concerned if I have pain around the liver? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Re: hepatic adenoma rupture

    Hello,
Check out the Focal Nodular Hyperplasia thread or Hepatic Adenoma thread as you will get some great information. I did have a rupture which is how mine was found. They embolized the blood vessels and then waited about 5 months and then I had a resection (60% of liver removed) Ask me any questions and I will let you know my experiences. Others have had many similar situations. Good luck

    Hi again,
Sorry I forgot to tell you that you will know a rupture as I was doubled over in pain and they had to control this will pain meds until they could get me for a CT scan later in the day. Dana99

    Hi MGT-
Definitely check out the threads Dana mentioned. I just had a resection 3 weeks ago and doctors told me for the last 10 years that I had an adenoma. It was currently at 7.5 cm so I had it removed. Well, pathology reports after my surgery came back as saying FNH (focal nodular hyperplasia), but I had two instead of just one. There is a wealth of information for you from other women who are in the same situation. Good luck to you and feel free to ask us any questions you have.

    Re: hepatic adenoma rupture

Thanks to Dana99 and Rotlude for your replies. I'm so glad to have found these boards...I've been reading the FNH & hepatic adenoma boards all day (while supposedly working, of course).

So - it sounds like if a rupture occurs I'll know it. I'm having quite a bit of right side soreness, but it doesn't sound like what you describe, luckily.

In a way I should probably feel lucky - my new husband & I are trying to get pregnant and it's not happening fast, which is probably a good thing considering the new diagnosis. Guess we'll be holding off for a while longer.

    Again, thanks for the information.

Ooh - one more question. Can anyone recommend a liver specialist at Johns Hopkins?
    Thanks!

    Mgt,
I found my adenoma when I just had my baby and now I have been told not to have any more. However, I have read others where they were ok with having more children and were just being watched closely. You will probably have some pain in your right side and you may not even be able to sleep on this side. Do you have a good specialist and what are they doing for you right now? Dana99

    MGT:
Do you know the size of your adenomas and exactly how many do you have?

    Re: hepatic adenoma rupture

Dana99 & Rotlude: Thanks for your responses. I have 2 tumors, one 4cm. in the left lobe, and one around 3cm in the right lobe. At this point I'm being referred to a surgeon, who specializes in GI surgery. Apparently they have not yet ruled out FNH or liver cancer, but adenoma seems like the likeliest diagnosis.

Here's another pregnancy question - Once the adenomas are removed, is pregnancy allowed at that point, or is it never a good idea?

    Thanks
    MGT. (Michelle)

    Re: hepatic adenoma rupture

    MGT:
Concerning your question on pregnancy-- I had one pregnancy with my adenoma without any problems. My tumor however before my pregnancy was 4 cm, then at the end of my pregnancy it was 7.5 cm. It grew the most during my 2nd and 3rd trimester. I am sure with you having two that it will be recommended that you have them removed before considering any pregnancies.

With your question on pregnancy after surgery-- I had asked my surgeron about this, and he stated that considering how my MRI scans looked and how my liver looked, that I could have another pregnancy. At that time it was thought that my tumor was an adenoma. However, once removed my pathology reports said that I actually had FNH (focal nodular hyperplasia). These are extremely difficult to differentiate. My surgeron was shocked to find out my tumors were FNH. From my understanding, FNH is a lot less life-threatening than adenomas, as adenomas always have the potential to rupture and FNH does not. He said to wait about a year before considering another pregnancy, as it would take my body a complete year to recover from my surgery. Hope this answers your question.

I will let you know in the next day or so the exact diagnosis that I have. It was supposed to be adenoma however, I was told two days ago once we had a second pathology report that it is something a bit more rare than adenoma but at least it is not cancer.

I was told not to get pregnant due to the size my tumour grew to (about 10cm) I was told not to take any type of hormones so when menopause approaches I will have to go cold turkey. I did have a second tumour that was FNH and it was smaller. Like Rotlude said these are less likely to rupture and perhaps will make child bearing easier. Consult with your surgeon as it sounds like some do have varying opinions.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you are making out. Dana

    Re: hepatic adenoma rupture

    Hi all,
Well here is a new one for you. After a second pathology I have been diagnosed with hepatic angiomyolipoma. This is a benign liver tumour and is quite rare. From what I have read today it appears hard to differentiate from carcinoma and this is why I needed a second pathology report. Anyways I got the all clear today and am feeling good.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out. I will continue to read the posts to offer my encouragement to everyone as I feel like a new woman today. Tracey

    Re: hepatic adenoma rupture

Last year I had a ruptured hepatic adenoma. It started off with a burning sensation in mychest, and the pain intensified quickly and spread all over my chest. I had a liver ressection two days later, where they removed 60% of it. Recovery was about two months. There is some evidence out there that suggests pregnancy causes the adenomas to grow. Are you thinking of surgery to remove the adenoma(s), or are the doctors saying you should wait to see if they will shrink? Good luck to you!

    Re: hepatic adenoma

SMEC - thank you for that info. I'm paranoid about having these lovely things rupture, so I'm glad I now know what to look for. Currently, I'm just sore, which I understand is common.
I meet with a surgeon next week, and I hope he will recommend moving forward. That said, I have yet to receive a confirmed diagnosis of hepatic adenomas...but all signs seem to point in that direction.

    Thank goodness for these boards.
