Question Recovered cirrosis but having blood count issues

    Hi,
K, I have a question for anyone who has recovered without surgery from cirrosis of the liver...or anyone who may know the answer to what I'm asking. My father had cirrosis of the liver several years ago, he quit drinking cold turkey and the Dr's said after a year or so that his liver was healthy (they said it had regenerated itself) enough to not need a liver transplant.

A five or so years ago he developed diabetes and has it under control for the most part.

3 years ago he came to visit me and I noticed he was bruising and bleeding abnormally so we admitted him in the hospital and found his blood platelets were extremly dangerously low. He had a few blood transfusions and was discharged after a few days, but to this day his platelets are still below normal and they cannot figure out why. His Dr even discussed my fathers case with a blood specialist from one of the best hospitals here. So for the last 3 years all they do is continue to check his levels on a monthly basis. We still have no idea why it's been like this for so long....could this be due to the cirrosis?

Last month he was again admitted to the hospital because his platelets were low, as was his white blood cell count. And his diabetes blood sugar levels were fluctuating, they dismissed it as a side effect of antibiotics he had been on due to a case of pneumonia. His blood sugar and levels have gotten better but again his platelets continue to be low, his white blood count isn't normal yet as well but it did get better than what it was.

He also was told that his tummy is enlarged most likely due to scarring of the liver (from the cirrosis) and that he likely has water around his liver because of it. Should they do something about that or just leave it as is?

What could be causing his platelets to continously be so low, and do any of these syptoms sound like anything else? And should they do something to treat the water around the liver?

TIA for responding, sorry about the long post, but I guess it is all part of the puzzle.

Re: Recovered cirrosis but having blood count issues

Hi, I have Hep C, and Cirrhosis and all I have to do is barely touch anything with the back of my hands and it bruises right away. It only seems to happen on my hands. My nose bleeds a lot too, but I had Sinus surgery on that side last Aug so I don't know what's causing that.
Over a period of a year I have gained forty pounds, but I really don't think it's fluid, as I love to eat, and love sweets most of all.
Also I had quit drinking about six years before I even found out about the Cirrhosis. They say you can never be cured from it. I do feel good most of the time, and just take my Milk Thistle, also take Proprananol for Portal Hypertension.
    Hope this helps.
God Bless You and your Dad
PS You didn't say how old your Dad is. I found out when I was 59 now I'm almost 65 and by the Grace of God still going strong.

Re: Recovered cirrosis but having blood count issues

Thanks Pat. My Dad will be 65 next week. I wonder if the blood count issues could be because his liver is so scarred from the cirrosis? I know my Dad can't take alot of medications or herbal things because it throws his diabetes all out of whack so he usually just sticks to his diabetic pills and thats it...this last hospital visit was because of the antibiotics he ended up taking because his cold wouldn't go away.
Have your Dr's done blood tests on you, I know the bruising and bleeding is a sign of thin blood (platelets too low) and they warned my Dad that if he cut himself he could bleed too much and it could be serious so he has been warned to be careful and if he does bleed and it doesn't stop quickly to go into the hospital right away.
Thanks for your feedback. Goodluck with your health.

Re: Recovered cirrosis but having blood count issues

Kierrasmommy, yes I have had all kinds of bloodwork and they told me about the bleeding issue's too.
I had Sinus surg in Aug and they put me in the Hospital a day before and ran all kinds of tests. It was supossed to be a simple sinus surgery, but ended up in there for a week because I got a infection. I cannot take most medicines either because of the Cirrhosis. I also am supossed to get an Ultra sound every year, which I haven't had yet b/c I decided to change Doctors.

Re: Recovered cirrosis but having blood count issues

K, my Dad had bloodwork done again today and his platelets were at 77 (normal is between 150,000 to 400,000) and his whiteblood count was at 2.2 (normal is 10). They also said that the results of the ultrasound was that he doesn't have an enlarged liver or water around his liver but that due to the cirrosis that the vein that leads to the heart from the liver is enlarged. But the main reason for his big belly is his spleen is enlarged and not functioning properly if at all, and that it may actually be causing more issues because of that, so they are going to be removing it, but first is his gallbladder which is almost overflowing with gallstones. They are going to remove them separately and they hope that these 2 surgeries will fix all the problems.

So Pat, are the bleeding (blood count level) issues due to the cirrosis, because my Dad's Dr's really haven't been able to pinpoint why his blood levels are so low. You sound so much like my Dad with medication tolerances, blood issues etc, it would make sense to me.
    Thanks again for responding

Re: Recovered cirrosis but having blood count issues

K, well I too have an enlarged spleen, and I think it has something to do with the blood flow between the Liver and the Spleen, The enlarged Spleen is called Portal Hypertension and that's what they put me on the blood pressure med. for.
I've not had Gallstones My stomache is real big too, but they said there is no fluid. I have gained forty pounds, however I am always hungry, and love sweets, and I know I don't get mush excersize.
Ihave never had a biopsy. I've heard bad things about it, and I'm to old to put myself through anything unless I just have to. (I'm to chicken) (LOL)
