High blood ammonia due to liver problems.

Is there any diet available that would be like a preventative to keeping the ammonia from building in the blood for a person with liver problems?

I don't know. I found out myself I have on 50% of my liver working and I've been looking up different foods and supplements I should take.....Artichokes are #1 - and it says milk thistle & dandilion to rebuild liver cells. So I will be on thoes a while. Milk thistle has "great" reviews!

i tried the milk thistle and other stuff on my hubby several years ago. it made his stomach hurt too bad. i don't think it would help with ammonia. my hubby was admitted a few times for bad confusion due to high ammonia. i kept trying until i found out what worked. they have to poop 2 times (or more) each day. if he is going 2 times a day then he takes 2 tbsp lactolose twice a day. if he doesn't go at least twice then he takes 3 tbsp a day. if he still doesn't go twice or more, i add 17 grams of miralax once a day, twice if needed. his ammonia has been under control for a while now (fingers are crossed). the confusion from the high ammonia has probably been one of the worst things for me yet (for me). rbmax 7 is right about the protein and sugar too. good luck.

Wow! my consumption of protein is extremely high! I never put the two together. I do get a high ammonia smell sometimes and I always wondered why. But it seems you have had more medical help than me. I just found out about my liver 2 days ago. I will try the liver diet first. hopefully I won't end up on a lot of medicine. The most painful part is the rock like stools. I will try Miralax. r

Go to a GI doctor and get all your liver enzymes tested. I have just been thru it all with my husband his ammonia level was 290 and we never knew he ended up in a hepatic coma for 8 days on a ventilator in the ICU. Get checked and watch your diet no alcohol and no protein..... DRink alot of water. I have researced alot and we are keeping him going until h e gets on the transplant list he is only 45 and never sick until March and now totally disabled. We pray alot.
