    Hepatic adenoma need answers...please

Doctors found a hepatic adenoma on segment 5 of my liver last year in April. It was found because I complained to my regular doctor about a sharp almost stabbing pain on the right side under my ribs. Its been almost a year and I've had 3 MRI's and two visits with surgeons who have both turned me down for surgery. I've explained to them the pain I've had and how it seems to be getting worse. I cant sleep on my right side and or lead on the sofa or any thing else because of pain and discomfort. Both surgeons told me that the pain Iam experiencing is not from the adenoma that it must be from some thing else. I also plan to start having a family soon and since they dont want to do the surgery I dont know what else to do since they are telling me not to get pregnant either. What am I supposed to do? Can any one else tell me if they experienced the pain due to the adenoma?

hey.. I've just had my first visit with specialist since my diagnosis yesterday (I have 4 adenomas). My specialist implied that depending on where the adenoma is it's reasonable to have some twinging as it can "rub" off your rib cage in some instances. But it shouldn't really be a sharp jabbing prolonged pain.

How big is yours? They tend not to operate (as far as the U.S. is concerned) on adenomas under 5cm. If you are outside the US it differs too. I have one that's 13.5cm and they are not sure if they will operate or not yet as the risks of surgery often outweigh the benefits of getting it off (I live in Ireland and the european policy tends to be one of monitoring rather than cutting).

Are you attending a specialist liver hospital? Is there one near you?

Finn10. I'm very surprised they won't operate on an adenoma that is that large. Maybe because of the location it is risky - or your surgeons don't have enough experience?. I've heard the larger they are the more chance they have of hemmorageing (sp?) or turning malignant. Generally, if it's an adenoma they like to remove them if larger than 5cm here in US (though this is changing as they learn more about adenomas). Understanding that they favor monitoring there.. I'd still push them to explain why that is the best solution. I'm having a 6 cm adenoma removed in 2 weeks.. Although we could have gone with monitoring over the long term, there was no way my surgeon could guarantee it would remain 'harmless' over time...
mwel, I've also had this myterious pain on right side for a long time.. which my GI doctor said is possibly liver related (though i have also many GI issues so could be something else).. That's about as far as they will go to saying pain is maybe from adenoma. I see a lot of other people have been told otherwise.
With respect to pregnancy - they told me the same thing, which is 1 reason to have them removed before becoming pregnant. I'm not sure how large your adenoma is which is a factor here (inUS) as to whether it comes out or not..I have also been told that I could become pregnant but that it would be heavily monitored 'high risk' pregnancy..
Something to think about. I decided to have it taken out rather than go through a high risk pregnancy later.
Good luck to you both.. Keep asking questions.

Thank you Kamu and finn10 for the quick replies I didnt know how long it would take. The surgeon was very short with me about every thing the first one didnt tell me where the adenoma was located or even the size the second one did though he said it was about the size of a quarter and it was on segment 5 of the liver. I have not been refered to a specialist but again I do receive care with the Veterans Hospital so I'm not sure if they even have one. I'm beggining to think I may have to look else where for another opinion, the first surgeon told me that they didnt have any one that does surgery on the liver so they would have to send me to a private doctor, which I dont think they want to cover the cost. Sucks that I served my country and they cant do anything for me....

    Kamu,

I am pretty sure they will take it out but I am waiting on a second opinion from the top liver hospital in Europe (Kings in London). They've never seen anything like me in Ireland (apparently I have a variant on the standard adenoma which makes me rarer - yay) so they want more information before making a plan. I am fairly happy that I am being looked after and will be appropriately looked after.

Mwel, you should insist that your results get sent on for a second opinion with a liver specialist. Also you need to be monitored to ensure they aren't changing size etc. Have you come of your BCM?

I have an 5cm FNH which definitely causes me some pain behind the ribs, but like the rest of you am told it must be something else. Finn I also go to Kings for regular check ups - I go once a year for a scan and they are just keeping an eye on it. I have a strong family history of cancers so maybe they are extra cautious because of that. Who are you seeing at Kings?

    Hey McRegnal87
I am not seeing anyone there yet. My specialist here in Dublin has sent all my test results over to, I think, John O'Grady (I am not sure.. I was still kind of reeling from being told one of mine is 13.5 cms.. the others aren't so big, 4.5, 2.5 & 2cm respectively)

They've never seen anything like me in Ireland before so I don't know what will happen. They will be presenting my case at some special forces medical conference in 6 weeks too.

I have no family history of cancer, but my mum has pbc and autoimmune hepitites so I don't come from a family of healthy livers.

    Re: Hepatic adenoma need answers...please

Finn10, yes they took me off of my BCM immediately but i was kind of left in the blind when they told me I received a letter in the mail about the finding which just said they found a hepatic adenoma and to stop taking my birthcontrol immediately but no further info. I found every thing else on internet search which is horrible since I didnt know any thing about it I completely freaked out. I seriously want to start a family at the end of this year so its very important for me to find out as much info as I can for my next appitment with my regular doctor. I just moved to a new state so I'll be seeing a new Veterans doctor hopefully they will take better care of me here.

I wanted to know what specifics did they give you about adenomas and what kind of questions did you ask your doctor. Again thank you all for the help.

    Re: Hepatic adenoma need answers...please

    Mwel,
the questions I asked were: how big are they, where are they, what happens next, do I need regular blood tests/scans and what kind of contraceptive can I use.

As for pregnancy, the liklihood of complications with the size of mine us quite high so it's off the cards for awhile. If yours is small they may allow you to get pregnant as long as you are monitored. I would advise that you go see a liver specialist tho if at all possible as they would have more info than most regular docs. Also you can use the mirana coil (sp?).

    Hope that helps,

    finn

    Re: Hepatic adenoma need answers...please

Ok so I looked up this health board to prepare me for my questions for my doctor this next week because my husband and I were going to plan on starting a family later this year. Well yesterday I found out I'm pregnant...about a month along. I've wanted a family so long but I'm afraid they may not be able to do the surgery now or if I'll be considered a high risk pregnancy. Any body have answers...please?

    Mwel,

Congrats on the pregnancy.. My only piece of advice would be to find yourself a liver specialist asap and ensure you receive ultrasounds throughout the pregnancy of your liver.

other than that, can you keep updating us on your progress as at some point in the future I would like to have children and I would like to know what the best way to do that is.

    Cheers.

    Re: Hepatic adenoma need answers...please

Hi Im new on here. But in Nov last year I was told I have 4 adenoma's but they are only 2cm. I am experiencing stabbing pains as well near the ribs and have been to see my gp and consultant who both keep saying it cant be to do with the adenomas! Im really worried. I have a really swollen/bloated stomach. does anyone else have this too? I only found out about the adenomas as I had a massive weight gain over a few weeks. But I cant find any information on this or have read anywhere that anyone else has experienced this. Does anyone know if a liver cleansing detox would help? or can going on a diet make things worse?? Thanks for any help. so glad to find others in the same boat as me!!
