| Dark Brown Urine
The other day I went to the bathroom a few times and noticed I had dark brown urine which of course when I looke donline it said dark brown urine is a symptom of liver disorders like cirhosis. Now I am freaking out becasue I also have visible veins on my abdomen and tiny red lines near my breastbone. Anybody think I should be real concerned? The urine turned back to normal color about 3 hours after I had the dark urine, I remember it also happened once about 6 months ago. I am 37 and a moderate drinker although I am delpoyed right now and haven't had drinks in ablut 3 months.

First of all if you suspect it is our liver, stop drinking now. Dark urine can be a lot of things and it could be as simple as dehydration. However, dark urine can mean an over production of Billirubin as the result of liver disease/damage. Get your liver values checked and start there.

KCooke, I haven't drank in 3 months, the dark urine happened one day when I started taking a supplement for working out, not sure if that had anything to do with it. Also, I am currently deployed in the military so getting a liver panel is easier said than done.

First...thank you for your service. The dark urine could be from the supplements - it could be a lot of things. My mother passed away last Wednesday from a 4 year battle with liver disease. When you are back at post or stateside - you should have a general check up and have your ALT/AST levels checked. Your liver is such a vital organ you have no idea how badly your health suffers when it's not working properly. Your immune system and your clotting factor are controlled by your liver, everything that enters your bloodstream is filtered through your liver - please don't overlook this.

Kcooke, so sorry to hear a bout your mom. Do you think if this was a liver issue that my urine would alwyas be dark instead of just one time?

It's hard to say - my mother's jaundice waxed and waned as did her urine color and the color of her fecal matter. It's an increase in Billirubin that causes the color - increases are a signal that something is wrong with the liver. The liver will have good days and bad days even while it's failing. And your liver can show signs of trouble for a lot of reasons, a bad flu will cause your levels to be off as well as very serious liver diseases.
It was enough of a concern for you to ask the question to begin with so it's worth talking to a doctor about.

Hi! I had a liver transplant 24 years ago when I was a year old. I was taken off my medicine for the past 6 years and in that time I got pregnant and now have a 6 month old son. Well about 3 months after he was born I notice my urine was very very dark brown. Were or are you itchy all over your body? I was extremly itchy to the point where I was up all night crying and had scratches all over my body. About 2 weeks later I took my son to his doctors appointment and one of the nurses said my eyes were yellow and I looked jaundice.. I went to the emergency room the next day and found out a few days later that my liver was rejecting. I now have a drainage tube in and I am back on anti-rejection medicine..but the good news is I am starting to get out of rejection so I would go to the doctor and see what is gong on with you because the first thing I noticed was brown urine then I got itchy then jaundice.

from testical cancer I had in 2005 I now take injections of testosterone. Just about a year ago the doc up'ed my injections to 1ml twice a month. About three months ago I noticed that my urine was dark (very dark in the mornings) for three days after injections. When I asked my doc about it he said that higher levels of testosterone will make urine darker and reduced me to 0.5 ml twice a month.

Some people have high levels if you are up in the 900ng in Testo. then that could be the reason.
