Cirrhosis and almost normal labs
I recently was diagnosed with cirrhosis of liver from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. I had emergency surgery for a perforated duodenal ulcer and surgeon noticed cirrhosis and did a biopsy. I asked him about it and he said the labs are almost normal. Is this possible?

Re: Cirrhosis and almost normal labs
Liver enzyme labs basically show how many liver cells died the day the study was done but give little indication of how much fibrosis or scaring exists.

They are a good indicator of how fast damage is occurring, but a poor indicator of how much damage has been done.

It is quite possible to have normal labs with extensive fibrosis. Normal labs are a good sign though. They indicate though you may have a lot of existing fibrosis, current inflammation and ongoing damage is low and the rate of progression should be slow.

Take care of yourself and follow medical advise and you may be able to live with this disease for many years as long as inflammation and progression remain slow.

Best of Luck to you!

OK. Thanks. Gives me a better idea of what's going on. Surgeon was less than helpful with his explanation.

Did he give you an idea of how advanced it is? Do you have any symptoms or anything else?
How old are you?
Can you post your complete labs here?

Re: Cirrhosis and almost normal labs
I have some other problems. Cant eat greasy foods, always tired, skin has a yellow pallor to it, I'm always nauseous, lost a lot of weight with recent ulcer surgery and haven't put any back on. Appetite isn't very good either. I have no health insurance and am trying to get approved for medicaid. That's a slow process.
