5 months pregnant/Diagnosed with Giant Sclerosing Hemangioma ~ NEED INFO!
2 weeks ago I had my ultrasound to check the babyís anatomy, unfortunately (by chance) a 12 cm growth by my liver was also found, it equates to the size of a softball, my ultrasound abruptly ended and after a radiologist and an OB/GYN was consulted I was told I needed an MRI immediately. Everything became a whirlwind of stress, emotions, and questions from here on out. Iíve never felt so helpless or cried so many tears. I had an abdominal MRI two days later, the following day I was told that the radiologist diagnosed it (like a kiss of death) as giant lymphoma sarcoma, I have never felt in such fear and distress in my life. The following day I had a surgical biopsy, because of my pregnancy I was highly aware of the procedure and associated pain which was bad enough on its own. The doctor had a very bleak conversation with me about the steps that would be necessary if this was an aggressive cancer. He refused to give any forethought to what this mass was even after reviewing the MRI. After a week of despair, no sleep, and mine and my childís lives flashing before my eyes my doctor called with my biopsy results. I have a 12cm by 8 cm sclerosing hemangioma on or by the left lobe of my liver. The doctor wants me to meet with a general surgeon sometime before I give birth and I wasn't given any more information after that.

Can anyone give me any information about this? I have no symptoms. The growth is large but is it possible it will decrease after pregnancy? Can I have a natural birth or is rupturing a possibility. Are there are treatments other than liver transplant at this size? It appears information is very limited on this subject so any help would be truly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

Oh my. I just have to ask how is everything going?
I have a smaller liver mass, but I am currently dealing with it now before I have children. They think mine is a focal nodular hyperplasia.

Well I'm happy to say that I'm currently 35 weeks along in my pregnancy. The growth has not given me any complications. I will be seeing a specialist after the pregnancy to evaluate the tumor and see what we can do from there. My thoughts are even though it is large, it is not giving me pain so I will likely not seek surgery. I apparently have the ability to grow strange things as I also have a 10cm fibroid. The original plan was to have a c-section for fear the hemangioma could rupture (although this is highly rare) the fibroid is in such a place where if I do need a c-section the uterus may not be able to hold stitches and I would need a hysterectomy. The birth plan now is to have a vaginal delivery where I push the baby to the birth canal and the rest is done with vacuum assistance. I'm going to trust that my body will do the right thing, and I trust my doctor has my best interest at heart! When I first posted this I really believed I wouldn't make it this far, but I'm happy to report things have gone very well considering! Thank you for your concern and sending happy thoughts your way!

Hi. I have been diagnosed with several giant hemangioma's prior to pregnancy 5 and 6cm and several 2, 3cm with a total of six areas. I am now in my 22 week of pregnancy with no complications. My ob is following them closely for growth but they are really making me nervous of spontaneous rupture and a possible mandatory c-section. I have searched and searched for info on vaginal birth with hemangioma's which I would much prefer. How was your delivery? Do you have any other words on it?

Thanks so much in advance and I hope you and baby are well!

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Here is how my labor story played out...I was induced with cytotec and pitocin at 40 weeks and 5 days, after 14 hours of labor, the baby started to have problems with the heart decelling. I ended up with a c-section and removal of a goose egg sized fibroid. My little one is perfect in every sense of the word, in spite of my train wreck of a body, she will be 13 weeks tomorrow. Honestly, I feel that the c-section was the best way to go. I did end up with a staph infection afterwards, but that had nothing to do with the liver mass. Healing happened pretty quickly and the mass never appeared to be an issue, other than some right shoulder pain after surgery. Now that I am healed I do have to deal with the mass as now the local doctors aren't 100% what I have is a hemangioma vs. Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. So, I have a ct scan scheduled for next week, and if the results are still inconclusive I will have to see a hepatic surgeon and go from there. Your body is capable of amazing things, keep positive and know that you and the life inside of you are a miracle in the making.
