Liver Enzymes EXTREMELY High!

ALT 837 AST 374 LDH 290 GGT 473 Bilirubin .90

Negative Hep test, social drinker only. Sonogram on liver last year was normal. Gall bladder removed 12 years ago and at that time a liver biopsy was performed. Biopsy came back normal. I do not take any meds that would affect the liver. Enzymes have gone up and back down over the years, but never to a level this high.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Re: Liver Enzymes EXTREMELY High!

Are you feeling well? If your doctor doesn't want to do additional testing, I wouldn't worry. I have had all the blood tests, ultra sounds, liver biopsies done and so tired of it. I know there is something going on since I don't feel well most of the time. Dr. says I have high iron levels. Keep posting.

Those are quite high. In fact the numbers are alarming. I would be taking a copy of my blood work to get a second opinion from another Gastroenterologist.

Is the LDH = 290 a very high number anyone?, mine is not to far off that level. I am finding it hard to get information

sally135, I am no expert ( this is why I am on this website) but from what I can gather your ALT, AST and GGT are well outside normal ranges and are flagging something

Re: Liver Enzymes EXTREMELY High!

These levels require some action on your part to investigate the cause and get it treated. There are a number of conditions that can cause such high levels, including hemochromatosis (iron storage disease), autoimmune hepatitis (requires special testing different than viral hepatitis), primary biliary cirrhosis, etc. You need to see a liver specialist, have a CT scan, get your pancreas checked out, get ferritin (stored iron) levels done, and get to the bottom of this. It may certainly be something treatable, so please don't just ignore this. For Mommaoftwins, if you have high iron, you could have hemochromatosis, a treatable condition. Please pursue looking into that, as it is a serious disease, causing cirrhosis, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease IF UNTREATED. Treatment is easy-giving blood a few times a year to reduce the iron in liver and other tissues.

Re: Liver Enzymes EXTREMELY High!

Thank you Ladybud...Yes, my GI doctor has diagnosed me with hemochromotosis. I have an appointment on July 8th to start a phlebotomy schedule.
