Red face Valley Fever / coccidioides (have NEVER been west of Chicago!)

    Hi:

Strange situation here. I went to see my ID Dr (have a history of Lyme) and she ran a series of oddball tests to see if I had any other illnesses. My test for coccidioides (valley fever) was positive. Mayo is currently running another test set (complement factor and something else) that we are awaiting. Here's the thing - I have NEVER been to the SW, California, Washington etc - I've never been west of Chicago, and even then, it was in the city only for an overnight. I did live in the midwest in Michigan for a year (and kept my horse there) and also have spent time outdoors in Indiana. However, I've never in my life been to any of the states that people contract this infection in, nor has anyone in my immediate circle that I'm aware of. I do have conditions which compromise my immune system, such as Myelodysplastic Syndrome, and Lupus, but it was my understanding that I had to actively breathe in the spores to contract this. I've had about ten lung nodules over the past twelve years monitored annually now on CT, all two cm or smaller, but they've stayed pretty stable, and are likely due to something else. I do have fevers and some respiratory symptoms. I will be seeing my doctor when the tests are back - but right now I'm mainly looking for input at to how on earth I could have gotten this? Anyone else have a similar situation? Thanks.
