Question Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

A good friend of mine recently had xrays done of his chest and head. He was in a bit odf a scuffle, and the xrays were done to make sure there were no internal injuries or breaks. A few days later, when the Doc was putting the info away, he came across something unusual. He called my friend and told hi they saw a spot or a mass on his left lung, and also POSSIBLY a spot or a mass on the right side of his throat, but couldnt be sure about that one since the xray didnt show his throat too well.

For about 18 months he has had trouble with his throat, just being sore, feeling lumpy. No hoarseness or shortness of breathe. No coughing or pain when breathing. His chest has felt fine, no problems with it either. They have yet to do anymore tests but the Doc wants to rule out cancer and such. My friend has been a pack a day smoker for about 8 years, and hes a social drinker. He has been mostly healthy, and has no warning signs for cancer, with the single exception that he has lost about 60 pounds over a 8 month period. But its not unexplained, he moved to a place he hated, and went into a little bit of a depression, and stoped eating and sleeping right.

We just recently started into a relationship together, and the timing of this is SO bad. For those of you out there, what kind of things could cause something like that to show up on an xray? What kind of things could they find in the lungs? He hopes its just a cyst in his throat, but would you find one in the throat? What kind of tests will they do next? I am so worried about him, and he is ALWAYS thinking the worst.

Your time and answers are GREATLY appreciated!!

Re: Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

I am sorry to hear about your friend. I first hand know how

you are feeling and how much of a scare it can be. Only

time and test run can determine if it is cancer. My hubby

had a baseball sized mass in his neck plus a nodule found

on his lung. We were told this could be cancer plus the

clinic doctor had poked his mass with a 19 gage needle to

tell us it was a solid mass. We were just terrified this was

going to be cancer. We went to meet the surgeon 2 days

ago and the surgeon knew right away the mass in his neck

was a cyst and drained 3 containers of gunk. He also was

90% sure the nodule on his lung is infection caused. We

go back in a week for results. The thought of cancer is so

scarey but it does not always mean it is cancer. My hubby

also a smoker...ex smoker now he quit 2 days ago .

please update us on how he is doing. Haylee

Wow, thats a relief! I hope your hubby can continue down the road and be a successful non smoker. Something like this really puts things in perspective, and my friend has cut WAY back, and is hoping to quit completley by this summer. This is such a scary thing, and I appreciate the answers!!

Hang in there and please keep me updated on how your

friend is doing. When does he go to the doctors again?

Has any test been run yet? I know the waiting is the

hardest part we waited 8 weeks almost until we got any

    type of real answer. Haylee

Re: Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

He was living on the East Coast, and then moved back here (Im in the Mid West). Because they caught it there, he actually had to go all the way back there to have it seen about. So far he hasnt been able to see the original Doc who ran the Xray, but we are hoping he will see someone by next week. Its disheartining to hear it can take so long to get a good answer. We are hoping its nothing and he will be back soon, so I hope it doesnt take so long. Thank you, and Ill definitly be in contact.

Do you mind if I ask how long your husband had the lump before it came to the attention of a Doc? And has the infection cleared up for him? Thanks again!

Re: Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

Actualy hubby has had problems with this for about a year.

We thought it was just a lymph node reacting to some

dental work he had done. It went away and resurfaced

after a virus my family had. He thought it would go away

again but it didnt. It reached the size of a baseball and

became very painful. He went to the ER which nothing

much was done some blood work { came back ok} and he

was given some iv antibiotics and some to go. The ER doc

called this a submandibular mass and stressed how

important imidate follow up care was within a day or so.

We are in the progress of waiting on insurance so we had

no choice but to use a local clinic but the docs there work

at are areas best hospital figured it would be semi good

medical care. First visit the doc jumps at this could be

lymphoma and this is a firm hard mass but thinks it could

be mono { yet never test him for mon} tells us to come

back in a week to see if it shrinks. He goes back the doc

pokes the mass with a 19 gage needle to see if it is a cyst.

Then to say with a senior doctor observing that this was a

solid mass { again}. They then want him to do a cat scan

{ another week gone} does the cat scan we go back into

the clinic { another week gone} for results. He says the

mass is 6 cmm and needs imediate surgery plus the cat

scan seen a small nodule on his lung he wanted another

cat scan to get lower lungs. I am terrified at this point it

is going to be cancer. We get into the surgeon { another

week } Thank god for this surgeon he knew by feeling it

that it had fluid and could also see it on the cat scan.

He drained it 3 containers of gunk. He feels the lung is

also infection. We go back next week for results but doc

is pretty convinced its all infection. Has your friend ever

lived in Ohio, Ky or Tenn.? This is the most common place

to get this type of infection. I know there are other types

of infections as well. Keep me posted Haylee

Re: Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

Thanks Haylee. No, he actually hasnt lived there. Mostly just the East Coast. He finally managed to work out his health insurance, and has an appointment with a Dr. on Friday. I know it will probably just be a preliminary appointment, but Im just happy hes getting the ball rolling.

Im hoping that its nothing, maybe some scaring on his lungs, or an infection, wich may already be gone, or a swollen glad or something in his throat. Im hopeful, since most of the time cancer occurs later in life, he just turned 29. Aside from his smoking, he doesnt really fall into any other risk groups, and his family has no history of cancer or any other lung or respitory disorders.

I sure appreciate your answers, and it makes me feel better to read the story. I care alot about him, and Im so afraid for him, but you have been very helpful. Ill keep you posted.

Howd everything turn out for you hubby?

Re: Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

Hey there, his appointment didnt reveal much for us. Hie Doc is sending for his original xrays, and they did a physical. Everything cam through ok, except his blood pressure was high, so they might look a little closer at his heart to.

Its getting irritating to me that it is taking SO long. His original xray was in January, and its almost May and I know there was a delay due to his trip here, it doesnt seem like anyone is working as fast as Id like for them to. Hopefully the patience will pay off soon, and evrything will be ok.

If I remember right, isnt your hubby supposed to have an appt. today? Good Luck to him, and let me know how it goes!!!

Hey there, I know the wait is the hardest part.

Hubby went in today the mass was full of puss again.

so gross. They need to get the fluid out to do

surgery and remove the cyst. He goes back in 2 weeks.

The nodule on his lung shrunk alittle that

was the best news. When does your boyfriend go back

    again? Keep in touch Haylee

Re: Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

    YEA!!!!!!!

The Doc. finally looked over the xrays and went over his condition, and said its CLEAR!!

Hes sure the spot on the lung xray was just an old scar, or something wrong with the film, as it is small and not condusive to a mass.

The lump in his throat is also small, and not condusive to cancer, and is likley a fluid filled cyst they will remove.

Needless to say, smoking is on its way out the door, and thank God for that too.

And, he will be back in the middle of June, so we can start building a life together. I am so excited he is healthy, and things can finally start fresh for us.

Thank you so much haylee, and Im gonna stick around. The Dr. will do a final scan on Monday, and then he will be free to go. YEA!!!! Let me know how it goes for your hubby!

Re: Spot or mass on lung/throat? Help!!

YEA I am so happy for the both of

you it sounds like your end results were about the same

as ours. My hubby's neck was a cyst / infection and

spot on his lung infection. We need to celebrate.

My hubby is feeling great does not appear to be filling up

again and he will see the surgeon again on the 20th if no

fluid they can get it out of him. I am so happy for you

and plz keep me posted on how you are doing. Haylee
